  • Patent number: 4882439
Abstract: Total synthesis of steroids with substitution in the 2,3, 6, 11 or 17 positions comprising the step of cyclization of a compound having the formula ##STR1## or analogues thereof, where X represents .dbd.O, ##STR2## or .beta.-substituted ##STR3## Y represents .dbd.O, .beta.-oriented ##STR4## or .beta.-orientated OH, R' and R.sup.2 may be the same or different and R' represents alkyl or aryl and R.sup.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 1986
Date of Patent: November 21, 1989
    Assignee: The University of Sheffield
    Inventor: David N. Jones
  • Patent number: 4461734
Abstract: Process for the plasticization and pumping of low bulk density synthetic thermoplastic materials through extrusion die means employing a mixer type extruder, the extrudate from said extruder is passed through a rotary melt pump and the molten material is discharged therefrom through a die member.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 13, 1982
Date of Patent: July 24, 1984
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: David N. Jones, Urho S. Haapala, Leonard S. Scarola
  • Patent number: 4415711
Abstract: A process is disclosed for forming blown film of a low strain hardening polymer, such as a low pressure polymerized-low density ethylene copolymer, including an improved film bubble expanding technique which permits high production rates to be achieved with good film bubble stability. Advantageously, most of the films produced by the process have a relatively high degree of film clarity.

    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
    Inventor: David N. Jones
  • Patent number: 4350657
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for the low energy melting, extrusion and pumping of material comprising feeding, metering, melting and mixing of such materials in an extruder having a melter screw and subsequently passing the resultant extrudate, through breaker plate and adapter means, to and through a rotary gear pump and, in turn, to a die member.

    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: David N. Jones, Archibald L Burnett, John C. Miller
  • Patent number: 4330501
Abstract: A process and apparatus are disclosed for forming blown film of a low strain hardening polymer, such as a low pressure polymerized-low density ethylene copolymer, including an improved film bubble cooling technique which permits high production rates to be achieved with good film bubble stability. The disclosed process comprises cooling a molten film bubble by contacting the outside of the film bubble with separate annular streams of cooling fluid fed through at least two stacked annular cooling rings disposed around the film bubble, wherein all or substantially all of the cooling fluid exits the system through a common plane formed by the last cooling ring.
