Patent number: 7832591Abstract: A method is provided for dispensing solid pharmaceutical articles using an apparatus including a housing and a sensor system, the housing defining a dispensing passage having a dispensing inlet and a dispensing outlet downstream of the dispensing inlet, the sensor system including first and second sensors spaced apart along the dispensing channel such that the second sensor is located downstream of the first sensor. The method includes: forcing at least one article along a path through the dispensing passage; generating detection signals using the first and second sensors responsive to articles passing through the dispensing channel; and using the detection signals from the first and second sensors to monitor dispensing performance of the apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2007Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: PARATA Systems, LLCInventors: Edward Joseph Karwacki, Jr., Richard D. Michelli, David Newcomb

Publication number: 20100232640Abstract: A method of verifying the identity of a dispensed pharmaceutical includes the steps of: reading identifying indicia on a pharmaceutical vial containing a dispensed pharmaceutical; determining the identity of a prescribed pharmaceutical called for by the identifying indicia; acquiring an image of the dispensed pharmaceutical through the vial; comparing the image of the dispensed pharmaceutical to data storage comprising image data associated with pharmaceuticals; acquiring spectral data for the dispensed pharmaceutical through the vial; comparing the spectral data of the dispensed pharmaceutical to data storage comprising spectral data associated with pharmaceuticals; and automatically determining whether the image and the spectral data of the dispensed pharmaceutical confirm that the dispensed pharmaceutical matches the prescribed pharmaceutical.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 23, 2009Publication date: September 16, 2010Inventors: Joshua Friend, Christopher E. Paul, Stefano Bresolin, Pete Klein, Caelan Klein, David Newcomb

Publication number: 20100185458Abstract: A method of tracking the exit of a filled prescription from a storage area configured to house multiple filled prescriptions includes the steps of: providing a pharmaceutical vial filled with a prescription of a pharmaceutical for a particular patient, wherein the vial includes an RFID tag that is specific for the prescription; storing the pharmaceutical vial in the storage area; detecting the RFID tag with an RFID detector as the vial is stored in the storage area, the RFID detector being associated with a controller; removing the vial from the storage area; detecting the removal of the RIFD tag to indicate removal of the vial from the storage area; and recording the removal of the vial with the controller.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 15, 2010Publication date: July 22, 2010Inventors: David Newcomb, David Alan Calderwood, Thomas P. Rhoads, JR.

Publication number: 20100128165Abstract: A vision system useful in acquiring images includes: a light dome having a window and a perimeter; an annular light curtain positioned within and radially inwardly from the perimeter of the light dome such that an annular gap is formed between the light dome and the light curtain; and a light ring positioned to illuminate the gap between the light dome and the light curtain. The light curtain and window are sized and positioned such that no direct light from the light ring reaches the window. The system further comprises a camera having a lens facing the window to acquire images of an object on a side of the window opposite the camera. The images acquired by the camera can then be compared to stored images to determine whether the identity of the objects (which may be pharmaceutical tablets) is as expected.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 23, 2009Publication date: May 27, 2010Inventors: David Newcomb, Demetris P. Young

Publication number: 20100091285Abstract: A method of producing an image of an object residing inside a transparent container of a first color includes: illuminating the container and the object with light of a second color, the second color being substantially the inverse of the first color; and producing an image of the object through the container. An image produced by this method can exhibit substantially the same color as the object itself, even when the image is taken through a colored transparent wall.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2008Publication date: April 15, 2010Inventor: David Newcomb

Patent number: 7565782Abstract: An automated method for dispensing pharmaceuticals particularly tablets and capsules, and other small discrete objects, includes: receiving prescription information, selecting a container, labeling the container, dispensing the tablets or capsules into the labeled container, applying a closure to the filled, labeled container, and offloading the container to a designated location. Preferably, the tablets are dispensed with high speed dispensing bins that employ forced air to agitate and singulate the tablets. The other functions within the system are typically carried out at stations designed to offer speed, flexibility and precision to the dispensing operation.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2008Date of Patent: July 28, 2009Assignee: Parata Systems, LLCInventors: Jeffrey P. Williams, Richard Michelli, Jasper Pollard, Simon Kelly, David Newcomb, Jess Eberdt, Pete Klein

Publication number: 20090101763Abstract: A cable hanger hangs cables in a linear vertical position. The cable hanger includes a bent resilient rod with two elongated sections (legs) and a base section that form a U-shape design for holding cables. The bent resilient rod has a curved section and a downturn section extending from one of the two elongated sections (the first leg). The downturn section has a hook end. When the two elongated sections are pressed toward each other, the hook end can connect with the other elongated section (the second leg), thereby positively retaining (or locking) the cables in the U-shape design.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 22, 2007Publication date: April 23, 2009Inventors: David Newcomb, Douglas E. Weiland
