Patent number: 8690427Abstract: Methods for inspecting contents of a container. High-energy penetrating radiation collimated into a fan beam illuminates an inspected container from one side, while a plurality of detector plates are disposed on the opposite side of the container. Patent number: 6812834Abstract: A reference sample for testing fire detectors and a method of testing utilizing the reference samples. The reference sample comprises a fused mixture of pellets of the plastics usually found in aircraft cargo holds, with a heating element embedded in the sample. The pellets are in a plurality of layers with the composition of each layer being homogeneous but the thicknesses and porosities of the layers differing from each other. When the heating element is energized the layers of pellets, which have previously been fused into porous masses, begin to smolder, thereby generating a smoky atmosphere that as nearly as possible simulates the atmosphere in an aircraft cargo hold when there is a fire in the hold. In addition, a flammable liquid can be poured onto the sample and ignited, simultaneously with the energization of the heating element, by a separate ignition source to provide a flaming fire atmosphere.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2002Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of TransportationInventors: Richard E. Lyon, David R. Blake

Patent number: 6220901Abstract: A terminal board assembly for an electric motor is described. The terminal board assembly is configured to mount inside an electric motor terminal or conduit box and includes a terminal board and a mounting bracket. The terminal board includes six terminal studs and three connecting bars extending between the terminal studs. Quick connect spade type connectors are coupled to the six terminal studs adjacent the bottom of the terminal board to facilitate quick and easy connection of the wire connection leads of an electric motor. The terminal studs and connecting bars permit a choice of “Y” or “Delta” voltage connections to the electric motor. The terminal board also includes a first and a second slot positioned at, and parallel to, opposing ends of the board. The mounting bracket includes a base portion and first and second side portions depending from opposing ends of the base portion.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1998Date of Patent: April 24, 2001Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: L. Patent number: 6062739Abstract: A fiber optic connector assembly for mating an optical fiber to a receptacle includes an adapter and a plug separably coupled to the adapter. The adapter has a first end coupled to the receptacle with a first surface of the adapter contacting a surface of a housing wall through which the receptacle projects. A sealing member is disposed between the first surface of the adapter and the surface of the housing wall. In one embodiment the sealing member includes an O-ring groove provided in the first surface of the adapter and an O-ring disposed in the O-ring groove. The plug has an external surface with an alignment band formed on the external surface thereof. A first end of the plug is separably coupled to the second end of the adapter and a second end of the plug is adapted to receive the optical fiber. The connector assembly further includes a locking mechanism to prevent the plug from separating from the adapter in response to a vibration force.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1998Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: Raytheon CompanyInventors: David R. Patent number: 5336248Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for the treatment of or the inhibition of retinopathy of prematurity and to a method for treating or for inhibiting retinopathy of prematurity. The apparatus provided in accordance with the present invention includes a component or system for providing substantially only red light. Thus, light is provided having a wave band of approximately 612 nm or more. Furthermore, at least the patient's head is received in a device that limits the light which reaches the patient's eyes to the aforementioned red light. Thus, the patient is allowed to see substantially only red light.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1992Date of Patent: August 9, 1994Assignee: British Technology Group Ltd.Inventors: Peter A. Patent number: 4239591Abstract: A non-laminated paper sheet product characterized by regions or islands of increased thickness, usually located in the center of the sheet for more economical use of the paper product and for conservation of wood pulp. The regions of increased thickness are formed by depositing or laying additional pulp stock onto a generally uniform thickness paper web in the web-forming area of a paper machine in either wet or dry methods of paper production. Continuous regions of increased thickness in the web can be formed by corresponding variations in the width of the web or by spraying the additional pulp onto the forming web. Islands of increased web thickness can be formed by periodically interrupting pulp stock depositing sprayheads disposed at spaced locations across the width of the forming web, with timing devices or web thickness sensors controlling the sprayheads.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1978Date of Patent: December 16, 1980Inventor: David R. Patent number: 4197706Abstract: A readily portable hydraulic power source for supplying hydraulic fluid pressure to emergency hydraulic tools is foot-operated such that the operator's hands are left free to use the hydraulic tools and both the tools and power source may be operated by a single person. The power source includes a generally planar base member, a hydraulic pump fixedly mounted at one end of the base member, a foot-engaging planar member in generally overlying relation to the base member, a hinge connecting ends of the base member and the planar member for movement of the planar member relative to the base, and a resilient spring between the base and planar members to urge the members pivotally apart upon release of pressure from the operator's foot. The operator's foot is retained by straps and a heel retaining portion attached to the planar member, with the heel portion having an arm operatively connected to a hydraulic piston of the pump.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: April 15, 1980Inventor: David R.
