    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for maintaining control of a machine which produces thrust, rotation or other outputs in response to input signals. The apparatus has two distinct parts, namely the operator input portion and the output portion. The operator input portion consists of the primary thrust, rotation and other output control, and the input signal generation, signal maintenance and signal resume control. Through these controls, the operator enters the desired operation at conditions and levels for rotation, thrust, and other input signals. The output portion consists of an information processing and control portion and the power units for rotation, thrust and other outputs generated from the machine. The information processing and control system interprets all of the desired operational conditions and levels from the input portion and sends commands to the thrust, rotation and other power units to produce the desired outputs in response to the input signals.

    Abstract: A coupling assembly to interconnect an inner member and an outer member of a dual member drill string in torque transmitting engagement is disclosed. The coupling assembly is adapted to transmit torque input from both members to a downhole tool. In one embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a connector sub that fixedly and non-fixedly couples both members. In another embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a clutch mechanism to interconnect both members when the rotational speed of the outer member exceeds the rotational speed of the inner member. In another embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a mechanism to couple both members by axial downhole movement of the inner member relative to the outer member. In another embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a planetary gear system that interconnects both members to provide high torque to the downhole tool at relatively low output speed of the dual member drill string.

    Abstract: An apparatus for bursting pipe is preferably adapted to receive rotational energy from the inner member of a dual-member drill string. In a preferred embodiment, an oscillating pipe-bursting member, driven by the interconnected inner members, cuts or bursts a subterranean pipe. In another preferred embodiment, a screw drive moves a pipe-bursting member between an expanded position and a retracted position. In another preferred embodiment, the pipe-bursting member is an arm moveable in response to operation of a screw drive. In yet another preferred embodiment, the pipe-bursting member is hydraulically actuated. This invention increases the efficiency of pipe-bursting operations by utilizing rotation energy generated by a horizontal directional boring system.

    Abstract: A system and method for automatically drilling and backreaming a horizontal borehole underground. The system includes a horizontal drilling machine and a machine control system for operating the drilling machine. The machine control system has sensors and control circuits for monitoring and automatically controlling the functions of the drilling machine. The machine control system manages the power consumption of the drilling machine, the fluid dispensed during drilling and backreaming, the lengthening and shortening of the drill string, the tracking and recording of progress along a selected bore path, and the guiding of the downhole tool along the selected bore path. In a drilling operation the method involves identifying a selected bore path and automatically guiding the downhole tool along the selected bore path. In a backreaming operation the method involves connecting a backreamer and a utility line to the drill string and automatically pulling the utility line back through the borehole.

    Abstract: An automatic pipe handling system for automatically transporting pipe sections to and from a horizontal boring machine. The system comprises a pipe handling assembly, a pipe lubrication assembly, a makeup/breakout assembly, and an automatic control system. The pipe handling assembly stores pipe sections and transports the pipe sections to and from the drill string of a boring machine. As the pipe handling assembly transports a pipe section, the pipe lubrication assembly lubricates the appropriate pipe joints. The makeup/breakout assembly secures the drill string and pipe joints so that pipe sections can be added to or removed from the drill string. A programmed controller automatically operates the pipe handling system and its components by synchronizing the operations of the pipe handling system. The controller sequences and times the operation of each aspect of the pipe handling system during both the boring operation and the backreaming operation.

    Abstract: An automatic pipe handling device (10) is disclosed which includes a support frame (12) mounted on a boring device (14). Removable pipe racks (16, 80, 130, 140) can be placed in position on the support frame (12) to deliver pipe to the spindle axis or to remove pipe therefrom as required. The pipe sections are removed from the pipe rack and positioned on the spindle axis by pipe grippers (32) mounted on hydraulic cylinders (28, 30) mounted on a rotating longitudinal shaft (20). The grippers and shaft similarly return the used pipe sections for storage to the pipe rack. In one pipe rack (16) an S-shaped guide path (72) is used. In another pipe rack (80) a plurality of rows (88, 90, 92) of pipe sections are used. In another embodiment, pipe is stored in an arcuate path.

    Abstract: A device utilized for accurately measuring inclination angles independent of roll position using optical methods, whereby an amplitude of reflected (or refracted) light rays from a surface of a gravity-leveled liquid are detected by a photo-detector. The amplitude of the detected light beam is a function of the beam's angle of incidence to the liquid, which is proportional to the angle of the sensor's inclination. The incline sensor includes a cylindrical symmetric vessel which is partially filled with a liquid, an axially symmetric light emitting diode (LED) and a photo-detector. The fluid is chosen to have indices of refraction of at least 1.33, or reflectivity >0.60 so that measurable refraction (or reflection) angles can be realized for the geometry of the sensor. The liquid is also chosen to have freezing and boiling points acceptable for use in the desired applications.
