  • Publication number: 20210372274
Abstract: This disclosure presents systems to enable downhole bi-directional communications using a long length of electrical cable located within or partially within the internal diameter of a set of lower pipe segments and communicatively coupled to one or more upper pipe segments that utilize pipe cable attached to the outside diameter of each of the upper pipe segments. The long length of electrical cable and the one or more pipe cables from the upper pipe segments allow for communication coupling between downhole tools and surface equipment and surface computing systems. In some aspects, the pipe cable attached to the upper pipe segments can be protected from wear using clamps, collars, cages, and other protectors. In some aspects, an electrical signal generator and modulator can be located downhole proximate the downhole tools, uphole proximate one of the upper pipe segments, or proximate the surface equipment.

  • Patent number: 11174692
Abstract: This disclosure relates generally to pulling tools and, more particularly, to incorporating a bailer feature in pulling tools. A pulling tool may be provided that includes a housing. The pulling tool may further include a tool engagement assembly securing in the housing with a distal end of the tool engagement assembly extending from the housing for engagement with a well tool. The pulling tool may further include a bailer chamber formed in the tool engagement assembly and in fluid communication with an exterior of the pulling tool through an opening in the distal end of the tool engagement assembly. The pulling tool may further include a valve positioned in the opening of the tool engagement assembly.

  • Patent number: 9511829
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for tracking a toolstring at subsea depths. One system includes a remote operated vehicle (ROV), a wireless transmitter arranged on the toolstring and configured to transmit one or more wireless signals, a wireless receiver configured to perceive the one or more wireless signals, whereby the ROV is able to locate a position of the toolstring in the oceanic environment.

  • Patent number: 9347288
Abstract: In modeling operation of a well tool in applying a force to a device in a well, a computing system receives inputs representing a plurality of geometric characteristics of the well tool. The computing system also receives inputs representing a plurality of geometric characteristics of the well. The computing system determines based on the geometric characteristics of the well tool and the well, a predicted reaction force on a portion of the well tool that affects operation of the well tool in applying force to the device. The predicted reaction force is due to contact between a surface associated with the well tool and a surface of the well.

  • Patent number: 9316077
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for a hybrid downhole force generator (DFG) using a stroke amplifier driven by hydrostatic pressure for a low-force, long-stroke portion of setting a downhole tool and a DFG powered shaft for a high-force, short-stroke portion of setting the tool. The stroke amplifier has a piston slidable in a housing, movable in response to hydrostatic pressure. The DFG powered shaft is connected to the piston via one-way slips which allow relative motion of the piston and shaft in one direction. The amplifier housing is connected to the DFG housing. In use, the DFG shaft is powered by a power supply, such as an electric motor, etc. The shaft is powered to shear a shearing mechanism, freeing the piston to move in response to the hydrostatic pressure.
