Patent number: 5542924Abstract: The catheter has a housing of such a size as to be readily held in the hand of the user, and a tubular proximal portion connected to and extending from the housing. The proximal portion is formed of a flexible polymeric material. The distal portion is coaxial with and is adjacent to the proximal portion. The distal portion is also formed of a flexible polymeric material and it has substantially the same outer circumference as the proximal portion. The distal portion is more flexible than the medial portion. A pair of control wires extend longitudinally through the proximal and distal portions and parallel to the axis of the coaxial portions for bending the flexible portions in response to movement of the control wires. A control is carried by the housing for controlling the movement of the control wires to thereby bend the flexible portions and remotely manipulate the catheter within a human body.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1995Date of Patent: August 6, 1996Assignee: Catheter Imaging SystemsInventors: Phillip J. Patent number: 5251638Abstract: A biopsy forceps device is presented herein which employs a forceps assembly having a pair of forceps connected to the distal end of a control wire having its proximal end extending into a hub. A control wire actuator is connected to the proximal end of the control wire and the actuator is slidably mounted to the hub for slidable movement relative thereto between proximal and distal positions for respectively causing the forceps to be in a closed condition and in an open condition. A releasable locking mechanism normally blocks forward slidable movement of the actuator to prevent the forceps from being actuated to an open condition. A release mechanism releases the locking means from blocking forward movement of the actuator to thereby permit forward movement of the actuator causing the forceps to be actuated to an open condition.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1992Date of Patent: October 12, 1993Assignee: Cordis CorporationInventors: Robert J. Cottone, Jr., Joseph J. Kopp, Jr., David S. Rowley

Patent number: 5184625Abstract: A biopsy forceps device is presented herein wherein an elongated flexible hollow body portion having a lumen extending therethrough is provided with proximal and distal ends. A forceps assembly is coupled to the distal end of the body portion and the assembly includes a pair of forceps. A control wire having proximal and distal ends extends through the lumen of the body portion and is coupled at its proximal end to a handle and at its distal end to a forceps assembly. A trigger is mounted to the handle for slidable movement relative thereto between a proximal position and a distal position. A gripping device grips the proximal end of the control wire and is movable between first and second positions for respectively moving the control wire between a forceps open condition and a forceps closed condition. The gripping device is resiliently biased toward its first position. The lever arm engages and moves the gripping device from its first position to its second position against the resilient forces.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1992Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Assignee: Cordis CorporationInventors: Robert J. Patent number: 4512419Abstract: An improved coring device that incorporates a nonrotatable inner barrel disposed within the outer driving structure of the drill string which is coupled to a coring bit. A woven metal mesh sleeve is circumferentially mounted outside the inner barrel and tucked around its lower end. The lower end of the mesh sleeve in the inner barrel is in turn connected to a stripper tube which is pulled upwardly during the coring operation. As the core is cut by the coring bit and enters the inner barrel, the woven metal mesh sleeve is disposed about the core and constricts about the core when pulled upwardly by the stripper tube. The opposing end of the woven metal mesh sleeve is connected to a weight which serves to compress the metal sleeve when outside the inner barrel, thereby increasing its diameter to prevent binding or jamming.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1983Date of Patent: April 23, 1985Assignee: Christensen, Inc.Inventors: David S. Rowley, James T. Aumann

Patent number: 4278138Abstract: A composite drill collar for drilling bore holes in earth formations including a structural steel outer jacket having a lower end secured to a lower coupling connectable to a drill bit and an upper end secured to an upper coupling connectable to an adjacent drill collar thereabove. An annular heavy metal core of sintered tungsten is disposed in the jacket and is held in compression therein by preloading the lower and upper couplings against the ends of the core, which places the jacket in tension, causing the jacket to contract and grip the periphery of the core. The structural steel jacket has a thick wall to carry the bending, torsion, compression, tension and impact loads encountered in the drilling operation, so that such loads are not carried through the core, which has the purpose of increasing the overall density and mass of the composite drill collar, lessening considerably the tendency for a deviated well bore to be produced.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1980Date of Patent: July 14, 1981Assignee: Christensen, Inc.Inventors: David S. Rowley, James T. Aumann, Lothar H. Waldes

Patent number: 4244432Abstract: The invention relates to the design of earth bore-hole drill bits employing shaped preform cutters containing hard abrasive materials, such as diamonds, the cutters being mounted in companion preformed sockets in a hard metal bit matrix.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1978Date of Patent: January 13, 1981Assignee: Christensen, Inc.Inventors: David S. Rowley, Bruce H. Walker, Coy M. Fielder

Patent number: 4234048Abstract: A diamond drill bit for drilling bore holes in earth formations having a body connectible to a drilling string, and provided with a matrix portion of hard metals in which diamonds are surface set at the outer gage portion and adjacent to the bit axis, the hard metal matrix having preformed grooves in which preformed diamond impregnated segments are inserted, which are a mixture of diamonds and hard metals, and secured to the matrix portion by brazing material. During bit rotation in the bore hole, the segments cut the major portion of the hole, the diamonds being dispersed throughout the mass of each segment for selective release from the segment as the diamonds become damaged and lost, thereby exposing new diamonds in the segment at a controlled rate, and thereby producing continual resharpening of the segments. As a result, the drilling rate of the bit is increased, as well as the length of hole drilled.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1978Date of Patent: November 18, 1980Assignee: Christensen, Inc.Inventor: David S.
