Publication number: 20180227835Abstract: A communication technique for establishing communication among an access point, an electronic device, and a radio node in a cellular-telephone network is described. In this communication technique, the electronic device is pre-provisioned by the radio node with an identifier of the cellular-telephone network. Moreover, the access point may advertise support for one or more LWA protocols in beacons. In response to a query from the electronic device, the access point may provide identifiers of the one or more cellular-telephone networks supported by the access point. If one of these identifiers matches the identifier, the electronic device may associate with the access point. Then, the access point may receive LWA traffic from the radio node and may forward the LWA traffic to the electronic device.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 16, 2015Publication date: August 9, 2018Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Steve A. Martin, David A. Wright, David Sheldon Stephenson

Publication number: 20180063714Abstract: A technique for establishing connectivity between electronic devices is described. In particular, when an electronic device is first connected to a network, the electronic device may use a predefined location of a registrar device to request location information for a controller for the electronic device. The electronic device may provide a manufacturer certificate to the registrar device to confirm its identity. After receiving from the registrar device the location information and a registrar certificate that confirms its identity, the electronic device may use the location information to request the security information from a controller that allows the electronic device to establish connectivity with another electronic device. The electronic device may receive the security from the controller along with a controller certificate that confirms the identity of the controller. Moreover, the electronic device may establish a connection with the other electronic device based on the security information.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 30, 2015Publication date: March 1, 2018Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventor: David Sheldon Stephenson

Publication number: 20180026841Abstract: In order to configure an access point, the access point requests information specifying an associated cloud-based controller when the access point is first turned on at a user location. In particular, the access point may provide, to a configuration device, a controller query requesting information specifying a unique network address of a cloud-based controller associated with the access point. This controller query may include an identifier of the access point (such as a serial number). Then, the access point receives, from the configuration device, the information specifying the unique network address of the cloud-based controller, such as a fully qualified domain name of the cloud-based controller. Note that the cloud-based controller may be one of multiple cloud-based controllers from different providers, and the access point may be associated with the cloud-based controller based on the received information specifying unique network address.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 23, 2017Publication date: January 25, 2018Applicant: Ruckus Wireless, Inc.Inventors: David Sheldon Stephenson, William S. Patent number: 9226167Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and systems directed to facilitating troubleshooting wireless connectivity issues in a wireless network. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, either a diagnostic supplicant in the wireless client or a diagnostic manager initiates a troubleshooting protocol between the diagnostic supplicant and the diagnostic manager over a diagnostic link in response to one or more events. In one embodiment, after the diagnostic supplicant establishes a link to a diagnostic manager via a diagnostic link, the diagnostic supplicant generates and transmits a problem report to the diagnostic manager. The problem report initiates a troubleshooting protocol between the diagnostic manager and the diagnostic supplicant.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2013Date of Patent: December 29, 2015Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Timothy S. Patent number: 8897778Abstract: An infrastructure assisted network transition scheme is provided. In a multi-mode wireless communication device, handover threshold data is received from a management server associated with a first wireless network comprising one or more wireless access points. The multi-mode wireless communication device receives signals from the one or more wireless access point devices of the first wireless network and generates data representing the received signals. The multi-mode wireless communication device analyzes the data representing the received signals with respect to the handover threshold data to determine when the multi-mode wireless communication device should initiate hand-in to the first wireless network and when to initiate hand-out from the first wireless network to the second wireless network. Functions are provided at the management server to enable the generation of the handover threshold data from network configuration information associated with the first wireless network.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2009Date of Patent: November 25, 2014Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Sudip Ghosal, David Sheldon Stephenson

Patent number: 8204029Abstract: A system and method are provided in which access point (AP) devices in a wireless local area network (WLAN) are typed or configured into one of three measurement and reporting roles: Monitor-Mode AP (MMAP), Portal AP (PAP), a Border AP (BAP) or an Interior AP (IAP). APs are assigned specific link measurement requirements according to their assigned type or role. In general, MMAPs and PAPs have the greatest measurement and reporting responsibilities, BAPs have less measurement and reporting responsibilities than PAPs and IAPs have the least measurement and reporting responsibilities. The APs generate measurements that are supplied to appropriate equipment to facilitate handover decisions with respect to a dual-mode wireless client device that roams between the WLAN and another network or vice versa. As a result, link measurements are only performed by APs in locations where such measurements are necessary for handover service, thus reducing the overall processing load on the WLAN infrastructure.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2008Date of Patent: June 19, 2012Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: David Sheldon Stephenson, Seema Nayak, Sudip Ghosal, Rajneesh Kumar

Patent number: 8077675Abstract: Techniques are provided herein to improve the manageability of handover performance of multi-mode wireless client devices when roaming between a wireless local area network (WLAN) and at least one other network. Signals are received at a plurality of WLAN access points from multi-mode wireless client devices. The WLAN access points generate handover data associated with handover events of wireless Voice-Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication sessions for the multi-mode wireless client devices between the wireless local area network and at least one other network. The WLAN access points also generate link quality data representing status and quality of a wireless link with multi-mode wireless client devices during a VoIP communication session. A controller that is provided that is configured to receive the handover data and link quality data for multi-mode wireless client devices from the plurality of access points.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2009Date of Patent: December 13, 2011Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: David Sheldon Stephenson, Sudip Dhosal

Patent number: 8005030Abstract: Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to facilitating WLAN diagnostics and management using traffic stream metrics. In a data collection stage, according to one implementation of the present invention, localized uplink measurements are taken at a wireless client associated with a wireless access point. During periodic intervals (e.g., every 5 seconds), the wireless client, in one implementation, transmits uplink measurement information to the wireless access point. The wireless access point may also take downlink measurements, which may also include one or more of the following metrics: observed latency, queuing delay, packet loss rate, and packet count information. The wireless access point, in one implementation, may aggregate and report the uplink and downlink metric information to a network management system.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2005Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: David Sheldon Stephenson, Arnold Mark Bilstad, Wenfeng Huang, Jason Kim
