  • Publication number: 20120029748
Abstract: A system and method of controlling a hybrid electric vehicle powertrain is provided. The hybrid-electric powertrain includes an engine, a battery, an electric motor, an electric generator and a transmission with a planetary gear unit. The planetary gear unit mechanically couples the engine, the electric motor and the electric generator to effect power delivery to vehicle traction wheels. Stored electrical power is delivering to the electric motor to drive the traction wheels in an electric-only operation mode. A first amount of torque is applied to the planetary gear unit with the electric generator in order to reduce the amount of wear to the planetary gear unit in the electric-only operation mode.

  • Patent number: 8007396
Abstract: An automatic transmission includes a first planetary gearset having a first planet pinion set rotatably supported on a common carrier and drivingly engaged with a first sun gear and a first composite gear that acts both as a first ring gear and a second sun gear. A second planetary gearset includes a second planetary pinion set rotatably supported on the common carrier and drivingly engaged with a third sun gear, the first composite gear and a second composite gear that acts both as a second ring gear and a third ring gear. A third planetary gearset has a third planet pinion set rotatably supported on the common carrier and drivingly engaged with a third sun gear and the second composite gear. A series of nested clutches and multiple bakes are employed to establish six forward speed ratios and one reverse ratio using a single carrier.

  • Patent number: 6434827
Abstract: A method for producing a gear assembly 108 which allows for the relatively efficient transfer of energy. Assembly 108 is created by forming a first member 10 and a second member 40, by placing pinion support members 80 within the second member 40, by placing gear assemblies or pinions 63 upon each of the pinion support members 80, and by coupling the pinion support members 80 to the first member 10, thereby forming gear assembly 108.
