Patent number: 7134415Abstract: An engine cranking system includes an engine, a cranking motor coupled to the engine, a battery coupled to the cranking motor and to a system ground and a capacitor. First and second electrical paths interconnect the capacitor with the cranking motor and the system ground. The system further includes first and second switches and a first relay included in one of the first or second electrical paths. The first relay is moveable between at least a closed-circuit position, wherein the first relay completes one of the first and second electrical paths, and an open-circuit position, wherein the first relay interrupts one of the first and second electrical paths. The first switch is coupled between the first relay and the capacitor.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2005Date of Patent: November 14, 2006Assignee: Kold Ban International, Ltd.Inventors: James O. Patent number: 6988476Abstract: An engine cranking system includes an engine, a cranking motor coupled to the engine, a battery, a capacitor and an ignition switch. A first relay is connected between the cranking motor and system ground. A second relay is moveable between at least an open-circuit condition and a closed-circuit position to complete an electrical path connecting the capacitor with the cranking motor. The first relay is connected between the capacitor and the second relay. In one embodiment, a running engine sensory component is coupled between the first relay and system ground. In another embodiment, the engine cranking system includes a running engine sensory component connected to a relay and a control module connected to the relay and the capacitor. In one embodiment, a momentary switch is coupled between the capacitor and the relay.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2004Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: Kold Ban International, Ltd.Inventor: Dean R. Patent number: 6888266Abstract: A vehicle having an internal combustion engine, a cranking motor, and a battery includes a double-layer capacitor characterized by a capacitance greater than 150 farads, and a low internal resistance. First and second electrical paths interconnect the capacitor with the cranking motor. A control circuit is coupled between the positive and negative terminals of at least one of the capacitor and battery, and this control circuit includes a switch that applies a variable control voltage to a relay in response to the position of the switch. The relay is included in one of the electrical paths, and the relay isolates the capacitor from the cranking motor when switched to the open-circuit condition by the control voltage and enables the capacitor to supply cranking current to the cranking motor when the control voltage places the relay in the closed-circuit condition.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2002Date of Patent: May 3, 2005Assignee: Kold Ban International, Ltd.Inventors: James O. Patent number: 5388553Abstract: A starting fluid injection system for an internal combustion engine includes a first valve mounted adjacent a starting fluid canister to release starting fluid from the canister, a nozzle mounted to inject staring fluid into an internal combustion engine, a conduit connected between the first valve and the nozzle to conduct starting fluid from the canister to the nozzle, and a second valve positioned downstream of the first valve immediately adjacent the nozzle. The second valve is remotely actuatable to stop starting fluid injection by the nozzle promptly on command, and the second valve eliminates undesired flow of starting fluid into the engine in the event the engine speed falls below a preset threshold.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1992Date of Patent: February 14, 1995Assignee: Kold Ban International, Ltd.Inventors: James O. Patent number: 5301873Abstract: A low fluid indicator for a fluid injection system of the type having a sealed pressurized canister, and a valve responsive to a control signal to release fluid from the canister includes a counter that maintains a count. A pulse generating circuit increments the count by a first increment and a second increment in response to the control signal. The first increment is insensitive to the duration of the control signal above a threshold duration and is selected in accordance with a fill volume of the injection system. The second increment varies with duration of the control signal above the threshold duration and has a count rate selected in accordance with an injection flow rate of the injection system. A low fluid indicator lamp is responsive to the counter to indicator a low fluid condition when in the canister when the count exceeds a selected value.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1992Date of Patent: April 12, 1994Assignee: Kold Ban InternationalInventors: James O.
