For example, the regulator may be implemented with either or both of process model operating systems and thread model operating systems. Common examples of these include UNIX, LINUX, MP-RAS, MS WINDOWS or WINDOWS NT.

A domain contains the database systems, and a database in one of the systems has segmented global memory partitions. A virtual monitor partition provides logon access to the segmented global memory partitions in a form of a virtual database. Open application programming interfaces (API) enable logon access to the virtual monitor partition to access data in the virtual database. A multi-system regulator manages the domain and utilizes the open APIs to access data in the virtual data base.

Middle-tier application end users issue requests to a middle-tier application that submits the requests to a database system on behalf of the middle-tier end users. The middle-tier application may authenticate end users and maintain a session pool for maintaining sessions with the database system for virtual users comprising valid middle-tier application end users. The middle-tier application is able to assert the identity of virtual users corresponding to the end users for use in access rights checking and auditing of queries without establishing a new logon session for the user. To facilitate middle-tier application assertion of virtual user identities, the middle-tier application is registered as a valid database user with the database system.

The method comprises the steps of accepting a command in the database management system that implicates a metadata modification and providing that command to a metadata service, parsing the command to determine if the command requires a metadata modification, accessing a rule set defining rules for modifying the metadata when indicated by the parsed commands, and enforcing the rule defined in the rule set. The article of manufacture comprises a program storage device with a medium tangibly embodying processing instructions for performing the foregoing operations. The apparatus comprises a means for performing the foregoing steps. The article of manufacture comprises a means for performing these steps, including a computer implementing a database management system. The functions herein described can be performed by a special purpose processor, a single multipurpose computer.
