  • Publication number: 20140124179
Abstract: A device for exchanging heat between first and second fluid streams is disclosed. The device includes a core housing configured to channel the first stream through heat exchange elements and out through a first half exhaust port. A shell housing encloses the core housing and is configured to channel the second stream past the heat exchange elements, the shell housing being isolated from the core housing by a space. A second half exhaust port is formed on the shell adjacent with the first half exhaust port, the first and second half exhaust ports being separated by a gap. An expansion joint couples the core housing to the shell housing, the expansion joint configured such that the expansion joint allows the core housing to float within the shell. The expansion joint includes a flexible ring flange having an inner edge mounted to the core housing adjacent the first half exhaust port and a peripheral edge mounted to the shell housing at a circular attachment point surrounding the second half exhaust port.

  • Patent number: 5515913
Abstract: An anodically protected shell and tube heat exchanger for exchange of heat between a heat transfer fluid in the tubes and a corrosive liquid in the shell. A first anodic protection circuit at one end of the shell comprises a first elongate cathode that extends parallel to the tubes, is spaced laterally therefrom, and is in electrical contact with the corrosive liquid in a first zone between the tube sheet at the one end and a location spaced from the tube sheet at the other end. A second anodic protection circuit at the other end of the shell comprises a second elongate cathode that extends parallel to the tubes, is spaced laterally therefrom, and is in electrical contact with the corrosive liquid in a second zone between the tube sheet at the other end of the shell and a location spaced from the tube sheet at the one end.

  • Patent number: 5355945
Abstract: Heat exchange apparatus (10) for use in large vessels exposed to high thermal expansion and prone to acoustical noise and tube bundle resonance associated with high gas velocity comprises a shell (12) having a fluid inlet (14) and a fluid outlet (16). A plurality of heat exchange tubes (18, 20) are housed in the shell and extend parallel to each other substantially the length of the shell. The tubes are arranged so there is a central core (22), an inner layer (24) of tubes surrounding the central core, and an outer layer (26) of tubes surrounding the inner layer. The inner and outer layers of tubes are all in a common tube pattern. The tubes in one layer are rotated with respect to the tubes in the other layer. This results in tubes in both layers being arranged in different tube patterns in different portions or segments of each layer. That is, the pattern (34) of the tubes in one segment (28A) differs from the pattern (32) in adjoining arcuate and radial segments (28B, 28L, 30A).

The tubes are arranged so there is a central core (22) devoid of tubes, an inner layer (24) of tubes surrounding the central core, and an outer layer (26) of tubes surrounding the inner layer. The inner and outer layers of tubes are divided into segments (28, 30). The pattern (34) of the tubes in one segment (28A) is different from the pattern (32) of the tubes in the adjoining arcuate and radial segments (28B, 28L, 30A) so a checkered pattern of two different tube layouts is formed to reduce acoustical noise and prevent bundle resonance.

  • Patent number: 4588022
Abstract: An anodic protection system particularly useful in heat exchangers for cooling sulphuric acid, in which the cathode projects through both ends of the heat exchanger and a negative potential is applied to both ends of the cathode. The potentials are controlled to ensure that the hot and cool ends of the heat exchanger metal (tubes and shell) which ends have different potential requirements for remaining in the passive range, both remain within their respective passive ranges.
