  • Publication number: 20030108078
Abstract: A laser pulse driving method comprises the steps of selecting a desired laser pulse energy level and a laser pulse width, and then determining a target flashlamp current level corresponding to the laser pulse energy level and the laser pulse width. Further, the method teaches generating a reference voltage corresponding to the target flashlamp current level at a first input of a comparator, closing a power switch to deliver an actual flashlamp current level to the flashlamp from a pulse capacitor, and then presenting a shunt voltage proportional to the actual flashlamp current level at a second input of the comparator. Further steps include, turning-on a comparator output when the shunt voltage is less than the reference voltage, receiving the comparator output at a first AND gate input, receiving a control signal at a second AND gate input for a time equal to the laser pulse width and then applying the AND gate output at a power switch driver when both the first and the second AND gate inputs are present.

  • Patent number: 5642997
Abstract: A method for removing deep gingival pockets provides for excise of disease while providing for reconnection of the tissue-tooth connection. Steps in the process include creating a gingival trough in the pocket with a contact laser fiber, excising the pocket epithelium while selectively removing sulcular and pocket epithelium and granulation tissue fully around the targeted tooth to the full depth without breaking through the mucogingival junction, scaling the root surfaces to the full depth ultrasonically, lasing the pocket to remove granulation tissue and to disinfect the tissue, assist in hemostatis, cauterize free nerve endings, seal lymphatics, prepare the tissue for welding and desensitize the tooth, and compressing the tissue against the tooth until adhesion is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5308242
Abstract: A disposable hand tool of the compressed air drive type is disclosed for use in performing dental procedures on a workpiece. An elongated body has conduits penetrating a base at one end of the body. The conduits allow entry of a light beam, a pressurized water stream, and a compressed air stream into the body. The base includes attachment threads for securing the body to a source of the light beam, pressurized water stream, and compressed air stream. A plurality of passageways are in communication with the conduits for conducting the light beam, the water stream, and the air stream through the body. A head at the opposite end of the body contains bearings attached to a supporting shaft. The shaft includes a turbine impeller and a clamping hole for removable attachment of a dental bur to the shaft. The air stream drives the impeller at a high speed for rotating the bur about a rotational axis.
