    Abstract: A Reflective Field Emission Display (FED) pixel element and system employing same are disclosed. In the FED system disclosed, each pixel element is composed of at least one emitter that is operable to emit electrons and at least one reflector that is operable to attract and reflect the emitted electrons onto a transparent anode layer that oppositely positioned with respect to the emitter and reflector and is operable to attract the reflected electrons. In one aspect of the invention, the emitter layer is shaped to bound the reflector layer forming an electrical boundary that focuses the reflected electron beam onto a phosphor layer interposed between the transparent layer. In another aspect of the invention, a high voltage and a corresponding high voltage phosphor is applied to the transparent anode layer.

In a one aspect of the invention, a phosphor layer interposed between the transparent layer and the pixel element produces a light photon as reflected electrons are attracted to the transparent layer. In another aspect of the invention, a plurality of phosphor layers are applied to the transparent layer to produce a color display when reflected electrons are attracted to the transparent layer.

In the FED system, a plurality of reflective edge emission pixel elements are arranged in a matrix of N rows and M columns, the pixel elements contain an edge emitter that is operable to emit electrons and a reflector that is operable to extract and laterally reflect emitted electrons. A collector layer, laterally disposed from said reflector layer is operable to attract the reflected electrons. Deposited on the collector layer is a phosphor layer that emits a photon of a known wavelength when activated by an attracted electron. A transparent layer that is oppositely positioned with respect to the pixel elements is operable to attract reflected electrons and prevent reflected electrons from striking the phosphor layer. Color displays are further contemplated by incorporating individually controlled sub-pixel elements in each of the pixel elements.

    Abstract: A method and system for preventing a computer worm from unauthorized use of data indicative of at least one e-mail address stored in a data base is presented. The method comprises the steps of encrypting said data, receiving at least one e-mail message by accessing an e-mail server, decrypting said selected ones of said data to provide access thereto, and addressing at least one e-mail message using said decrypted data. The method further includes the step of re-encrypting the selected decrypted data. In one aspect of the invention, the method of encrypting the data comprises the steps of obtaining a key value, selecting each of the at least one e-mail address, encrypting the selected e-mail address using the key value; and storing said encrypted e-mail in the data base.

    Abstract: A system and method for securely exchanging plurality of information items used to generate a plurality of encryption keys used in a public key-and-private key system. In accordance with the principles of the invention, elements of exchanged information items, such as public key and synchronizing indictors are encrypted before the exchange. The information item element is encrypted using an encryption key determined from information items that were previously exchanged. The encryption of information items used to determine subsequent encryption keys provides additional security to the encryption key used in the transmission of informational data as the encrypted elements of the information item must be decrypted before the data message encryption key can be decrypted. The process of exchanging encrypted information items can be repeated until an agreed upon number of encrypting keys is determined.

    Abstract: A method and system of alternatively selecting an encryption key used to transmit a known number data bits and providing sufficient information to inform the receiving part of the selected encryption key is presented. In one embodiment of the invention, a plurality of encryption keys are available to the parties of the communication network. The transmitting party selects an encryption key used to encrypt a message block based on the data content of a previously transmitted message block. The receiving party, having received, and decrypted, a previously transmitted message block has sufficient information to determine the encryption key used to encrypt a subsequent data block and is able to decrypt the subsequently transmitted message.

    Abstract: An electrophoretic display includes a laminated triple pane construction with an electrophoretic fluid-containing envelope formed between the first and second panes and an ionizable gas-containing envelope between the second and third panes. A transparent reference electrode coats the first pane internal to the fluid envelope. A matrix of discrete pixels are disposed upon the second pane within the fluid envelope. Each pixel has a probe extending therefrom through the second pane and into the gas envelope. A plurality of row electrodes are disposed upon the second pane in the gas envelope in close proximity to corresponding rows of probes. A plurality of column electrodes disposed upon the third pane within the gas envelope perpendicular to the row lines establishes an addressable X-Y matrix. By impressing a sufficient voltage differential at selected intersections of the matrix, a local ionization of gas biases a proximate probe to the ionization potential.

    Abstract: The present invention is a modular electrophoretic display that can be selectively attached or detached from a larger assembly. The modular electrophoretic display includes a small, low voltage battery that provides a small bias to the anode, cathode and grid electrode of the electrophoretic display when no other power is present. As a result of the bias of the battery, the electrophoretic display is capable of retaining any image formed upon the display by the larger assembly. Consequently, different displays with differing images can be removed from, or added to, the larger assembly as needed. This promotes ease in photocopying the electrophoretic display and enables the display to be mailed, stored or otherwise handled without the loss of the image.
