  • Patent number: 4556338
Abstract: A method for reinforcing pavement involves the orientation of a sheet of elastomeric material reinforced by a plurality of substantially parallel, high tensile strength tire cords embedded therein and bonded thereto on a roadbed so that the tire cord fibers extend in the direction of the stress on the roadbed. The elastomeric material and the tire cord fibers are bonded to the existing roadbed and the roadbed is paved.

  • Patent number: 4351752
Abstract: A sizing composition and method of preparing sized glass fiber strand is provided to produce sized glass fiber strand that has reduced tackiness. The sizing composition has a low molecular weight liquid polymer selected from the group consisting of styrene-butadiene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer or hydroxy or carboxy derivatives of said copolymers, epoxy resins, polyester resins, or polyurethane resins that are free radically curable; and a free radical precurser selected from the group consisting of peroxides, hydroperoxides in an amount in the range of about 0.2 to 5 parts per hundred parts of liquid polymer in said sizing composition; or the said liquid polymer that can be treated with radiation to produce an equivalent amount of free radicals.

  • Patent number: 4286019
Abstract: Sized glass fibers are rendered less tacky by treating glass fibers with a sizing composition having a blend of components. The sizing composition has about 0.5 to about 2 weight percent of liquid hydroxylated styrene butadiene copolymer, about 0.35 to about 2 weight percent of one or more emulsifiers, about 0.5 to about 1.5 weight percent of a wet lubricant, about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent of one or more dry lubricant oils or waxes and about 0.3 to about 2 weight percent of an organo silane coupling agent. All of the weight percents are of the total aqueous sizing composition. The emulsifier or emulsifiers are those having a fatty acid portion with carbon to carbon chain lengths of at least 14 to about 20 carbon atoms. The wet lubricant has a nitrogenous group to provide hydrogen bonding with the surface of the glass fibers.

Abstract: Individual glass fibers are coated with a combined sizing and coating composition that includes a zinc salt having a solubility constant (K.sub.s) of not less than 1 .times. 10.sup.-.sup.3 complexed with ammonia as a substitute for all or part of the resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. The preferred combined sizing and coating composition includes as the latex constituent, a styrene-butadiene vinylpyridine terpolymer, as the resin constituent, resorcinol-formaldehyde and zinc sulphate complexed with ammonia and as the coupling agent, a silane selected from amino, amido, chloropropyl, epoxy, ureido-functional silanes. An aqueous solution of the combined sizing and coating composition is prepared and the individual glass fibers are coated shortly after attenuation with this combined sizing and coating composition. The coated individual glass fibers are thereafter gathered into strands and the strands are dried while spaced from each other. The dried strands are thereafter, collected on a forming tube.
