  • Patent number: 6527947
Abstract: A fuel control device 220 includes a restriction 294 and a check valve 292 disposed between a fuel return conduit 236 and a fuel injection supply conduit 227. In operation, fuel from tank 202 flows into the control device via conduit 208 is filtered through filter 222 flowing to an injection pump 230 outlet conduit 228. Excess fuel is returned to the control device and is then directed either back to the tank 202 via conduit 234 or is mixed with incoming fuel via conduit 235 and a two-position temperature responsive diverter valve 290. The restriction and check valve provide the benefit of allowing a continuous air bleed to purge any incoming air or vapor from the fuel supply system back to the fuel tank 202, while preventing unfiltered fuel flow from the fuel return outlet port to the filtered fuel outlet port.

  • Patent number: 6371884
Abstract: A method and system for an electronic engine control includes a strategy that correlates an accelerator pedal position with a selected, constant driveshaft power level regardless of changes in the transmission ratio. The invention includes adjusting the engine speed and torque so that the driveshaft torque both before and after the transmission shift remain the same if the accelerator pedal is at the same angle. The inventive constant power, part-load control strategy improves the smoothness of transmission shifts and fuel economy by creating a direct, consistent relationship between the pedal angle and driveshaft power level.

  • Patent number: 6341623
Abstract: An automotive vehicle fluid jet pump 7 is provided including a first chamber 340 having a rear end 348 sealed from a front end 344 by a pressure communicative boundary 352. The first chamber front end 344 has an inlet 332 fluidly connected with a source of pressurized fluid. The first chamber front end 344 also has a nozzled outlet 372. A second chamber 376 is provided having a first inlet fluidly connected with the first chamber outlet 372. The second chamber 376 has a second inlet 380 fluidly connected with a sump. The second chamber has a delivery outlet 334. A valve member 400 is operatively associated with the first chamber boundary 352 for controlling a flow from the first chamber inlet 332 through said first chamber outlet 372. A position of the valve member 400 with respect to said first chamber outlet 372 is responsive to a pressure differential between the first chamber front end 344 and rear end 348.

  • Patent number: 6269801
Abstract: An apparatus for priming a diesel fuel system includes a diesel engine having a plurality of injectors. The injectors receive a supply of diesel fuel from a fuel injection pump. A fuel feed pump supplies diesel fuel to the fuel injection pump. A controller energizes said fuel feed pump during an initial operating time period. The controller then de-energizes said fuel pump during a second operating time period to prevent heat build up, noise, and battery drain. The controller then energizes said fuel feed pump during a priming time period, allowing the diesel fuel system to be primed with diesel fuel. The controller then de-energizes said fuel pump after said priming time period to prevent heat build up, noise, and battery drain.

  • Patent number: 6253741
Abstract: A device for preventing fuel pump air ingestion in a diesel fuel system includes a diesel engine having a plurality of injectors. The injectors receive a supply of diesel fuel from a fuel injection pump at a high pressure. The fuel injection pump receives the supply of diesel fuel from a transfer pump at a transfer pressure through a transfer pressure gallery. The supply of diesel fuel is stored in a fuel tank coupled to the transfer pump through a fuel line. To prevent air from entering the diesel fuel system, a low pressure sensing switch is coupled to the transfer pressure gallery and senses the transfer pressure. When the transfer pressure drops below a predetermined pressure a controller disables the fuel injection pump. Once the transfer pressure rises above the predetermined pressure level the controller enables the fuel injection pump.

  • Patent number: 5887572
Abstract: A control system for a fuel delivery system regulates fuel pressure on the filtered side of a fuel filter and relieves excessive primary pump flow from the unfiltered side of the filter. The valve also selectively provides warm fuel to de-wax the fuel filter after a cold start. Once wax build-up is no longer an issue, the warm fuel is directed to a fuel cooler or a heat sink, such as the fuel tank. The control system prioritizes the maintenance of filtered fuel pressure over maximizing fuel returned for cooling. Also, the fuel filter is protected from excessive fuel pressure differential.

  • Patent number: 5878724
Abstract: A fuel system for an automotive vehicle equipped with a diesel engine includes a fuel tank, a fuel injection pump, a fuel supply passage for conducting fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injection pump, and a fuel return passage for conducting fuel from the fuel injection pump to the fuel tank. A hydraulically powered lift pump moves fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injection pump through a fuel supply passage. The lift pump includes a hydraulic motor powered by fuel flowing through the fuel return passage and a primary fuel pump coupled to and powered by the hydraulic motor, with the primary fuel pump providing fuel to the injection pump through the fuel supply passage.
