  • Publication number: 20050013340
Abstract: Non-boil boiling point indicator includes a probe housing having inner and outer chambers and a heater located within the inner chamber at a free end of the probe housing. The probe housing has a free end provided with non-restrictive apertures. Similar non-restrictive apertures are located between the inner and outer chambers and from the outer chamber to an outer environment surrounding the probe housing. The temperature of the test fluid is monitored by a temperature monitoring device. As the test fluid is rapidly heated, its temperature quickly rises then flattens out before boiling point. This change is used to extrapolate to the boiling point. Localized steam or vapor bubbles are created next to the heater, which causes the test fluid above the heater to be propelled upwards and overflow through the unrestricted apertures at the top of the inner chamber into the outer chamber.

  • Patent number: 5671706
Abstract: A valve operating mechanism comprises a hollow shaft (10), a sleeve journalled on the hollow shaft and having a cam, a coupling yoke (16) connected by a first pivot pin (18) to the hollow shaft (10) and by a second pivot pin (20) to the sleeve and means for pivoting the yoke (16) to effect a phase change between the hollow shaft (10) and the sleeve, wherein the means for pivoting the yoke (16) comprises an actuating rod (24) slidably received in the hollow shaft (10), a cam surface on the actuating rod (24) and a plunger (22) passing through a generally radial bore in the hollow shaft (10) to cause the yoke (16) to pivot in response to axial movement of the actuating rod (24).

  • Patent number: 5033424
Abstract: The invention relates to an internal combustion engine wherein two intake tracts 12, 14 balanced for equal air flow, lead to each intake valve and both tracts have outer sections which open on to the same side face of the engine, the inner sections of the tracts having axes which lie in a common plane containing the axis of the valve and the inner sections of the tracts being substantially symmetrical about the valve axis.

  • Patent number: 5031584
Abstract: A mechanism is described for achieving variable lift of a valve of an internal combustion engine having an overhead camshaft disposed above the valves. The mechanism comprises two levers both pivoted about fixed fulcrums and a coupling member which is movable along overlapping arms of the two levers to vary the mechanical advantage and thereby vary the valve lift in dependence upon the position of the coupling member.

  • Patent number: 4763615
Abstract: The invention relates to a desmodromic system in which a valve stem is arranged to be acted upon directly, or by way of rockers, by an opening cam and a closing cam rotatable together at constant or varying angular velocity in synchronism with the rotation of the engine crankshaft, and in which a compliance device is incorporated in the transmission train from the cams to the valve stem, the compliance device comprising two cup-shaped members nested together with a limited relative movement between and resiliently urged away from one another, the compliance device operating to provide zero clearance when the valve is open and maximum clearance when closed to accommodate valve recession and thermal expansion.

  • Patent number: 4723517
Abstract: An engine driven camshaft cam is driven in a manner to superimpose a variable oscillation on the cam as it is rotatably driven in order to vary the period during which an associated valve is opened, the drive including an engine driven gear or sprocket journalled in a block whose axis is displaceable transversely to the axis of the cam, a slider member secured for rotation with the gear and guided for linear radial movement relative to the gear or sprocket, and a rack on the slider member engaged by a pinion coupled to the cam for oscillating the cam relative to the camshaft upon sliding movement of the slider in response to eccentrically displacing the axis of the gear.

  • Patent number: 4694789
Abstract: The invention relates to a drive mechanism for connecting an input shaft to an output shaft and superimposing on the output shaft a variable oscillatory motion determined by the position of a reaction member. The drive mechanism comprises an input disc fast in rotation with the input shaft, and defining a slideway transverse to the axis of the input shaft. A sliding member is made to slide along the slideway by a block journalled within a pivotable yoke, the block being itself slidable in a second slideway defined by the sliding member. A crank pin fixed to the output shaft is connected slidably to the sliding member such that as the sliding member slides along the slideway, the phase of the output shaft is varied with respect of the phase of the input shaft. A second similar mechanism drives a weight with opposite phase in order to cancel out the reaction torque on the input shaft.
