Patent number: 5478213Abstract: A fuel injection pumping apparatus has a cam (9) actuated reciprocable plunger (13) housed in a bore (11) into which fuel flows from a fuel supply (7,14). An outlet (12) extends from a pumping chamber (13A) defined by the plunger and bore. A spill passage (19) communicates the pumping chamber with a spill valve (16) so that fuel from the pumping chamber which flows through the passage and spill valve (20) flows into a cylinder (21) containing a resiliently biased piston (17). The fuel which flows into the cylinder is returned to the pumping chamber during outward movement of the plunger and the fuel supply (14,7) ensures that the pumping chamber is completely filled with fuel. A safety valve (30,31) allows fuel to escape from the cylinder (21) in the event that the piston (17) sticks in the cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1994Date of Patent: December 26, 1995Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: Kenneth M. Patent number: 5213481Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has a fluid pressure operable valve which can be opened to terminate delivery of fuel to an associated engine. The operation of the valve is controlled by an axially movable shuttle contained in a cylinder. The shuttle is biased toward one end of the cylinder and is displaced away from the one end of the cylinder by fuel supplied by an auxiliary plunger. The shuttle is angularly movable by an actuating mechanism to vary the extent of movement before operation of the valve. The shuttle is biased to the one end of the cylinder by a shuttle return piston in order to reduce the frictional loads on the actuating mechanism. The cylinder containing the return piston is connected to an accumulator chamber.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1992Date of Patent: May 25, 1993Assignee: Lucas Industries public limited companyInventors: Christopher Stringfellow, Peter A. G. Collingborn, Derek W. Tomsett

Patent number: 5203303Abstract: A rotary distributor fuel pumping apparatus includes a cam actuated pumping plunger which delivers fuel to a plurality of outlets in turn during successive inward movements. A spill valve is provided which can be opened when fluid pressure is applied to a piston to spill fuel from the bore. An auxiliary plunger delivers fluid under pressure which can be applied to the piston through a control valve. The control valve includes an annular spring loaded component which is moved by the fluid pressure and an angularly adjustable rod which is surrounded by the component. The rod is provided with a helical groove and the component with a slot and when these are brought into communication fluid under pressure is applied to the piston.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1991Date of Patent: April 20, 1993Assignee: Lucas IndustriesInventors: Peter A. G. Collingborn, Kenenth M. Harris, Derek W. Tomsett

Patent number: 5138999Abstract: A rotary distributor type fuel pump has an annular cam ring which is movable by a fluid pressure actuated piston to control the timing of fuel delivery. The cylinder containing the piston has an enlarged portion in which is slidable a sleeve located about the piston. The sleeve is engagable with the piston and one end is exposed to a fluid pressure applied to the piston to assist the movement of the piston when a valve is set such that an annular space is part defined by the other end of the sleeve, is connected to a drain.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventor: Derek W. Patent number: 5119786Abstract: A rotary distributor fuel injection pumping apparatus has a pumping plunger actuatable by a cam to deliver fuel through a fuel delivery circuit, to an engine. The quantity of fuel supplied is determined by a spill valve which is actuated by a fluid control circuit including an auxiliary plunger also operated by the cam. A shuttle is movable by fuel displaced by the auxiliary plunger until it is brought to rest and the pressure increase actuates the spill valve. A valve is provided which connects the control circuit and the fuel delivery circuit during the initial movement of the shuttle.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1990Date of Patent: June 9, 1992Assignee: Lucas Industries public limited companyInventors: Peter A. G. Collingborn, Derek W. Tomsett

Patent number: 5101798Abstract: A distributor type fuel pumping apparatus includes pumping plungers and auxiliary plungers both operated by cams as the distributor member is rotated. The pumping plungers are housed in a bore from which fuel is delivered to outlets in turn. In order to control the start and function of fuel delivery a shuttle is movable axially by the fluid delivered by the auxiliary plungers and is angularly adjustable. A sleeve is mounted about the shuttle and is movable axially in response to engine speed. The shuttle and sleeves define a spill path through which fuel can escape from the bore and which is closed after a first predetermined axial movement of the shuttle and they also define a flow path which is opened after a further predetermined axial movement of the shuttle. Fluid flow through the flow path operates a spill valve to allow spillage of fuel from the bore.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1991Date of Patent: April 7, 1992Assignee: Lucas IndustriesInventor: Derek W. Patent number: 5080563Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type includes a main pumping plunger and an auxiliary plunger operable at the same time by a cam. During inward movement fuel is displaced by the pumping plunger to an outlet. The auxiliary plunger displaces fuel to a shuttle bore containing a shuttle and during the initial inward movement a first flow path to drain from the bore containing the pumping plunger is open but this is closed upon further movement of the shuttle until a second flow path is opened. The second flow path includes a groove having an inclined edge so that the angular setting of the shuttle determines the amount of fuel supplied through the outlet. A valve is also provided to allow fuel displaced by the auxiliary plunger to flow to a drain.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1990Date of Patent: January 14, 1992Assignee: Lucas IndustriesInventor: Derek W. Patent number: 4484727Abstract: A fluid control valve includes a valve member in the form of a sleeve which is shaped to co-operate with a seating defined about a bore in a valve body. The sleeve has a rod extending therein, the rod being coupled to an armature of an electromagnetic device including a stator having a winding. A resilient bush is located between the rod and the sleeve to allow limited further movement of the armature after the sleeve has engaged the seating.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1982Date of Patent: November 27, 1984Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: Kenneth M.
