Patent number: 9818224Abstract: Techniques are described for generating a composite image that depicts a first object with a second object. Two-dimensional images of the first object are captured, along with depth information that includes three-dimensional coordinates of points on the surface of the first object. Based on the depth information, a polygonal model may be determined for the first object including color information determined from the images. The polygonal model of the first object may be placed with a polygonal model of the second object in a virtual scene, and ray tracing operations may generate a plurality of pixels for the composite image. In cases where the first object represents a user and the second object represents a product, the composite image may provide a substantially realistic preview of the user with the product.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2013Date of Patent: November 14, 2017Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Connor Spencer Blue Worley, Devin Bertrum Pauley

Patent number: 9716842Abstract: An augmented experience improves user experience by including virtual reflections of an actual background on virtual items presented in a user interface. An augmented image comprising a representation of a virtual item with one or more reflective surfaces is generated and presented in a user interface. Virtual reflections based on images of an actual background acquired by a camera are generated. The virtual reflections are superimposed on the one or more reflective surfaces of the virtual item for presentation of the augmented image. During presentation of the virtual item, the inclusion of the virtual reflection may improve overall realism of the virtual item.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2013Date of Patent: July 25, 2017Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Connor Spencer Blue Worley, Devin Bertrum Pauley

Patent number: 9536339Abstract: Described are methods and systems of processing three-dimensional (“3D”) data by generating an edge map, a depth map, or both. Data points are placed into a bin array based their respective image coordinates. The data points in each bin are processed to determine edge data. An edge map may be generated from this edge data. A bin value may be generated based on the data points in each bin, and a depth map generated using these bin values. The edge data and the edge map may be processed using one or more filter functions. Measurements based on the edge map may be provided at a resolution greater than that available with the depth map.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2013Date of Patent: January 3, 2017Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Connor Spencer Blue Worley, Devin Bertrum Pauley

Patent number: 9165318Abstract: Described are methods and systems of providing an augmented experience on a user device to facilitate user interaction with one or more virtual items. An augmented image comprising an actual object and a virtual item is generated and presented in a user interface. The user interface allows the user to lock a relative position of the virtual item as presented, such that the user may appear to “move” the virtual item. The user interface may also provide sizing information of the virtual item relative item to the actual object.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2013Date of Patent: October 20, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Devin Bertrum Pauley, Connor Spencer Blue Worley, Edward Albert Liljegren, Peter A. Larsen, Jung Sik Yang, Thomas Bruno Mader

Patent number: 8834208Abstract: An electrical device has a socket formed as a continuous integral portion of an outer case housing. Conductors connect an interior of the socket to circuits within the device, and may be integrally molded with the outer case housing. Separate case housings may be assembled together to form the socket. A resulting socket has a lower profile and a reduced impact to a height requirement within the case, and has a relatively greater strength attributable to the inherent robustness of the case.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2011Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Assignee: BlackBerry LimitedInventors: Patrick Clement Strittmatter, Devin Bertrum Pauley

Patent number: 8805458Abstract: A battery protection mechanism is provided within an electronic device. A door has a latch which fits into a latch retention-release mechanism in the base of the device. A spring under tension within a retention-release mechanism presses against the latch when the device is in a closed configuration. A foot attached to a button in the base of the device urges the door out of position upon depression or activation of the button.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2012Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: BlackBerry LimitedInventors: Patrick Clement Strittmatter, Paul Daniel Everest, Devin Bertrum Pauley, Thomas Kevin Swindle, Duc Hongle Ngo

Patent number: 8616920Abstract: An apparatus comprises an assembly and a SIM-card tray configured to move, at least partially, into and out of the assembly to thereby selectively electrically connect and disconnect a SIM card that is disposed in the SIM-card tray to and from at least one electrical connector. A biasing member automatically urges movement of the SIM-card tray with respect to at least one of moving the SIM-card tray into the assembly and out of the assembly. By one approach this biasing member comprises a spring. By one approach this spring can serve to both automatically urge movement of the SIM-card tray into the assembly and out of the assembly. These teachings will accommodate a SIM-card tray configured to accommodate a micro-SIM card. These teachings will also accommodate a personal communication device having the aforementioned components.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2011Date of Patent: December 31, 2013Assignee: BlackBerry LimitedInventors: Devin Bertrum Pauley, Jonathan J. Wollak, Andrew Phong Le
