  • Patent number: 8725905
Abstract: A power over Ethernet (PoE) compliant device may be able to keep alive just enough of a management controller and/or target to respond to requests and tell a host (initiator) why it may be unable to respond to a data transfer request in a desired fashion due to a power failure. Thus only a small portion of an information handling system management capabilities need stay alive for reporting the operational condition of the overall information handling system during a power outage.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 11, 2006
Date of Patent: May 13, 2014
    Assignee: Dell Products L.P.
Inventors: Jared Terry, Samit Ashdhir, Dhiraj Sehgal
  • Patent number: 7849335
Abstract: A system and method for providing a communication enabled UPS power system for information handling system is disclosed. According to one aspect, an information handling system can be used to communicate with a power source using a first power cable. The information handling system can include a power circuit operable to power a portion of an information handling system using input power provided by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The information handling system can also include a UPS controller coupled to the power circuit. The UPS controller can control the output of the first UPS using a first power cable operable to provide the input power to power the portion of the information handling system.

    Inventors: Jared Terry, Dhiraj Sehgal
  • Patent number: 7587626
Abstract: An intelligent hotspare drive with pre-emptive drive rebuild is disclosed. In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for rebuilding a drive using an intelligent hotspare drive in an information handling system including detecting an error in a first drive in an information handling system such that the error indicates a possible drive failure. The method further includes automatically rebuilding the first drive with the detected problem using a second drive in the information handling system such that the second drive begins to mirror the first drive even though the first drive has not failed.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 7549112
Abstract: A system and method for identifying physical blocks marked as logically “bad” or “punctured” during a drive rebuild process enabling the information handling system to process these blocks more intelligently and preventing existing drive physical media errors from needlessly being copied and propagated to new drives. Various implementations of the invention allow physical blocks on a target drive to be marked as “punctured” so they can be diagnosed to verify that they have not been erroneously marked as being “bad,” thereby reducing the number of misdiagnosed drive failures.
