  • Patent number: 6742027
Abstract: A data processing system and method are described for permitting a server computer system to remotely disable an input device included within a client computer system coupled to the server utilizing a network. The server computer system transmits a message to the client computer system to disable the input device. In response to a receipt of the message, a network adapter included within the client computer system disables the input device by prohibiting a data stream output from the input device from being received by an input/output controller included within the client computer system.

  • Patent number: 6628663
Abstract: A method and system are described for permitting a dumb device having no operating system to create and transmit a network packet utilizing a network. The dumb device is coupled to a client computer system utilizing the network. A network interface is established within the dumb device. In response to an event, the dumb device generates an internal output signal. The output signal is received within the dumb device by the network interface. In response to a receipt of the output signal, the network interface creates and transmits a network packet including an indication of the event to the client computer system, wherein a dumb device having no operating system creates and transmits a network packet.

  • Patent number: 6601097
Abstract: A method for determining the physical locations of a plurality of computers in a network is disclosed. The network includes a plurality of wall plates, each of the wall plates for coupling one of the computers to the network. The method and system comprises providing an additional information physical layer and logic in each of the wall plates. The method and system further comprises capturing and storing the system media access-controller (MAC) address of the connect computer in the additional logic of each of the plurality of wall plates and storing a physical address of the wall plate in the logic of each of the plurality of wall plates. The method and system also comprises providing a command from the network that will cause the system MAC address and the physical address of at least one of the plurality of computers to be provided to an application in the network.

  • Patent number: 6567920
Abstract: A data processing system and method are disclosed for authenticating a client computer system to a secure network prior to permitting the client computer system to attempt to log-on to the network. The secure network is controlled by a server computer system. A unique identifier is established which identifies the client computer system. The unique identifier is encrypted. Prior to permitting the client computer system to attempt to log-on to the secure network, the client computer system transmits the encrypted identifier to the server computer system. Also prior to permitting the client computer system to attempt to log-on to the network, the server computer system utilizes the unique identifier to determine whether to permit the client computer system to attempt to log-on to the network. The client computer system is authenticated prior to permitting the client computer system to attempt to log-on to the network.

  • Patent number: 6405259
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for transmitting a network packet which identifies only selected ones of a plurality of client computer systems. The client computer systems are coupled to a server computer system to form a network. A logical group is specified which includes only a first plurality of the plurality of client computer systems by specifying one of a plurality of group identifiers. A network packet is then transmitted utilizing the network to the logical group. The network packet includes the group identifier which identifies the logical group, wherein only the logical group are the intended recipients of the packet.

  • Patent number: 5765008
Abstract: A computer having a riser card with a riser card interface that connects to an industry standard system board and has slots for expansion cards is provided with support circuitry that enables the computer system to perform personalized functions not provided for by the industry standard system board, including security functions. The placing of the support circuitry on the riser card allows the use of an industry standard system board and the personalization of the system to perform different IBM PS/2 functions depending on the installed riser card, in conjunction with Micro Channel and PCI bus architecture.

  • Patent number: 5524252
Abstract: This invention relates to the adaptation of personal computers to communication through external networks, and more particularly to the ready adaptation of such computers to networks of varying characteristics, such as telecommunications networks located in various countries of the world. The adapter has first and second controllable digital/analog convertors for exchanging signals with a digital signal processor of the computer and controllable by a bus interface controller of the computer for converting signals between digital and analog forms. The adapter also has first and second connectors of the type required by the particular external network, coupled to the convertors for exchanging signals with the external network and for exchanging signals with an external device such as a telephone set.
