Abstract: 4,4'-diaminobenzophenones of the formula I ##STR1## where the rings A and B can be further substituted, are prepared by a process in which a compound of the formula II ##STR2## where the rings A, B and E can be substituted, is oxidized with aqueous nitric acid in the presence of nitrobenzene or of an alkanoic acid and under superatmospheric pressure, and the reaction product is cleaved.The process according to the invention gives the compounds of the formula I in high yield and purity.

Abstract: 3-Chloro-8-cyanoquinolines of the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is --NR.sup.2 R.sup.3, and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are identical or different and are each hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, formyl, cyclohexyl, or phenyl, or together are tetramethylene or pentamethylene, and one methylene group in these radicals can be replaced by oxygen, nitrogen or --N(CH.sub.3), are used for controlling undesirable plant growth.

Abstract: A process and apparatus for the separation of components from a mixture which forms an azeotrope is disclosed by subjecting the mixture to extractive distillation to remove one of the components and regeneration to separate another component from the extracting agent added to the extractive distillation column. According to the invention, a first side stream is withdrawn from the extractive distillation column, passed in heat exchange with the bottoms from the extractive distillation column en route to the regeneration column and returned to the extractive distillation column at a point below the point at which it is withdrawn. A second side stream from the extractive distillation column is withdrawn, passed in heat exchange with the bottoms of the regeneration zone and returned to the extractive distillation column. For this purpose, separate heat exchangers are used for the respective side streams.

Abstract: In a process for the preparation of an alkyl tert.-alkyl ether by reaction of an isoolefin branched at the double bond and an alkanol in the presence of a cation exchanger, the improvement which comprises:(a) Employing as the cation exchanger a macroporous or gelatinous acid cation exchanger in the H.sup.+ form which has been charged with 0.1 to 5 grams, per one liter of dry cation exchanger, of an elementary form of a metal of sub-groups VI, VII or VIII of the periodic table of elements (Mendeleev) which cation exchanger is crosslinked with the degree of crosslinking of 2 to 65% and has a specific surface area of 5 to 750 square meters per gram on the basis of dry cation exchange resin; and(b) The reaction is carried out in the liquid phase at a temperature of 30.degree. to 140.degree. C. at a pressure of 2 to 100 bars employing a molar ratio of isoolefin to alkanol of 0.1 to 5.

Abstract: Novel 1,2-benzisothiazoles and a process for the manufacture of 1,2-benzisothiazoles by reacting o-haloaryl ketones with ammonia and elementary sulfur. The compounds are starting materials for the manufacture of dyes, crop protection agents and drugs.

Abstract: Novel 2-substituted 1-alkyl-nitroimidazoles and a process for their preparation by reaction of 2-methyl-nitroimidazoles with oxalic acid diesters, followed by reaction of the resulting nitroimidazol-2-yl-pyruvic acid esters with chlorine, in turn followed, if desired, by reaction of the resulting 2-dihalomethyl-nitroimidazoles with water.Both the novel and the known compounds obtainable by the process of the invention are valuable starting materials for the preparation of dyes, pesticides and drugs.

Abstract: A duct section serves as part of a supply system for supplying electric power or a pressure medium to a mobile appliance and especially to a mining machine in a mine working where protection against explosion or fire is necessary. The duct section has a wall with a longitudinal slot therein and pick-up engages in the slot to collect the electric current or pressure medium. The slot is sealed with the aid of thin flexible sealing strips held flat against the inner and outer surfaces of the slotted wall. The pick-up is shaped to progressively deflect the strips away from the slotted wall to permit the passage of the pick-up and maintains the interior sealing with the aid of further seals slidable engaging with the slotted wall over the region where the strips are deflected.
