  • Patent number: 8901519
Abstract: The invention concerns a device and a process for adjusting the range of an ion beam, in particular for irradiation in tumor therapy. For this purpose, first the reference position of a target volume to be irradiated is determined. Subsequently, the range of an ion beam is configured such that said beam is adjusted to the reference position of the target volume, in such a manner that the Bragg peak, i.e. the maximal energy loss and thereby the maximal damage occurs in the region of the target volume which is to be destroyed. In the case that it has been determined that the reference position has been altered by a movement of the target volume, the ion beam is then deflected from the beam axis such that the ion beam is directed to various regions of a range modulator, in order that the ion beam experience a correspondingly adjusted energy loss in passing through the range modulator.

  • Patent number: 6745072
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of checking the beam generation means and beam acceleration means of an ion beam therapy system that comprises a grid scanner device, arranged in a beam guidance system, having vertical deflection means and horizontal deflections means for the vertical and horizontal deflection of a treatment beam perpendicular to its beam direction, with the result that the treatment beam is deflected by the grid scanner device to an isocentre of the irradiation site, and a specific area surrounding the isocentre is scanned, wherein the type of ion, the ion beam energy, the ion beam intensity and the blocking of the accelerator and also the means for terminating extraction are checked.

  • Patent number: 6683318
Abstract: An ion beam therapy system and method for operating the system includes a source of ions (300), an accelerator system (400) and an ion beam transport system (60) for directing an ion beam to a plurality of treatment stations (100) to treat patients. The ion beam transport system (60) includes a gantry (8) carrying a vertical deflection system (45) and horizontal deflection system (55) positioned upstream from a last bending magnet (65) so as to provide a parallel scanning mode by an edge focusing effect.

  • Patent number: 6635882
Abstract: The invention relates to a gantry system for adjusting and aligning an ion beam onto a target from a freely determinable effective treatment angle. The ion beam therein is introduced in the horizontally arranged gantry rotation axis of the gantry system and is firstly deflected away from the gantry rotation axis by means of magnetic optics. The ion beam is then so aligned onto a target at adjustable angles of from 0 to 360° around the gantry rotation axis that the ion beam intersects the gantry rotation axis in the isocentre of the gantry system. Besides the gantry, the gantry system has a target carrier system having a rotatable target carrier, the carrier rotation axis of which is arranged in the isocentre in a vertical direction with the respect to the gantry rotation axis. The final deflection magnet so deflects the ion beam that the ion beam intersects the gantry rotation axis in the isocentre at an angle of between greater than or equal to 45° and less than 90°.

  • Publication number: 20030164459
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for positioning a tumour patient (1) having a tumour (2) in the head/neck region (3) in a heavy ion therapy room (5) with respect to a heavy ion beam (6) from an unchangeable direction (C) that is fixed by spatial coordinates, the heavy ion beam (6) being guided by means of two rapid deflection magnets (7) over the tumour cross-section orthogonally in the horizontal and vertical direction and the depth of penetration of the ion beam being determinable by varying the heavy ion energy and the amount of radiation by means of adjustment of the heavy ion dose in an irradiation plan and being monitorable by a PET camera installed in the radiation room, wherein the device, as an alternative to a patient couch, fixes the patient (1) in the seated position and has mechanisms that, by the degrees of freedom of movement of the device (8), keeps the tumour (2) of the patient (3) in the isocentre (9) of the ion beam (6).
