    Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention disclose apparatus and methods that can be used to mechanically actuate a downhole tool with an expandable shifting tool. One embodiment of the invention is an expandable shifting tool comprising a housing having an outer diameter and a plurality of radially extendable elements. The radially extendable elements are longitudinally separated from each other and each extendable element is at least partially contained within the housing. The extendable elements are capable of moving between an extended position and a retracted position and are biased towards the extended position.

    Abstract: One embodiment of my invention comprises a tool string for testing a wellbore formation that includes a production inlet, an injection outlet, and a sampler apparatus. Fluid is taken from a production zone, into the tool string through the production inlet, out of the tool string through the injection outlet, and into the injection zone. Within the interior of the tool string, the sampler apparatus takes samples of the fluid flowing therethrough. In another embodiment, a large volume of sample fluid is trapped within the interior of the tool string, such as between two valves, and is removed from the wellbore along with the tool string subsequent to the test. In another embodiment, the tool string includes at least one perforating gun to perforate one of the production and injection zones. The tool string may also include two perforating guns to perforate both the production and injection zones.

    Abstract: A tool string for use in wellbore includes a sampler device having a port to receive pressure in an annulus region of the wellbore. An elevated pressure is communicated to a rupture disk assembly located in the port to rupture the rupture disk assembly. The elevated pressure is then communicated through a passageway to an activating mechanism of a sampler device. The activating mechanism is adapted to open a flow control device that controls flow through one or more ports of the sampler device. In another arrangement, the activating mechanism of the sampler device may include a pressure transducer for receiving pressure pulse signals. In response to pressure pulse signals of predetermined amplitude and pulse width, the pressure transducer may generate an activating signal to an actuator to operate the flow control device. Yet another arrangement includes a timer for activating the sampler device. The timer is actuatable by an elevated pressure.

The second mechanism causes the valve to transition between the first state and the second state in response to a pressure differential between the exterior region and the inner passageway.     Abstract: A tool that is usable in a subterranean well to sample well fluid from a zone does not include a pump to remove well fluid from the zone for purposes of sampling. Instead, the tool includes a flow path that is in communication with the zone and a region of the well above the zone to use a pressure differential created or naturally occurring between the zone and the region of the well above the zone to flow well fluid from the zone. The tool may also include a flow path that is in communication with the region of the well above the zone and the region of the well below the zone to equalize pressure along the tool and thereby prevent unintended axial movement of the tool. A fluid sampler of the tool samples a composition of the well fluid from the zone.

The tubing is adapted to receive a drill string in a passageway of the tubing, and the lubricator is located downhole and is connected to the tubing. The lubricator is adapted to be remotely operable from a surface of the well to control fluid communication between the passageway located above the lubricator and a formation located beneath the lubricator. The lubricator may include a sleeve and controller. The controller selectively moves the sleeve into a passageway of a valve of the lubricator to protect the valve from a downhole fluid.

    Abstract: A valve for use in a tool positioned in a well that includes a body having a bore and a port connected to permit fluid communication between the well and the bore. A piston is supported in the body for movement between an open position to open the port and a closed position to close the port. A rupture disc is responsive to fluid pressure in the well and ruptures when a predetermined pressure is applied so that fluid pressure is communicated to the piston to move it from the closed position to the open position. A lock member secures the piston in the closed position after the piston moves from the open position to the closed position.

The isolation device separates a first and a second portion of the chamber. The chamber is adapted to receive fluid in the second chamber portion from the first zone. The first chamber portion can be charged with fluid pressure to move the isolation device in a second direction to pump the first zone fluid inside the second chamber portion into the second zone.

The one or more uni-directional flow control devices are adapted to be opened by fluid flow from the formation and to be closed by pressure from a fluid column in the flow conduit when the fluid flow is shut off. In another arrangement, an isolation system and method includes a valve, a string having a flow conduit (e.g., tubing, flow tube, etc.) and a lower end, and an actuation tool (e.g., a shifting tool) attached to the lower end of the string and adapted to operate the valve if the string is lowered into or raised out of the wellbore.

The tubular member has an internal passageway, and the hydraulically set packer circumscribes the tubular member and is adapted to be set in response to a difference between first pressure that is exerted by a first fluid in a passageway of the tubular member and a second pressure that is exerted by a second fluid in an annular region that surrounds the packer. The control line is adapted to communicate an indication of the first pressure to the packer, and the valve is adapted to selectively block the communication of the indication to prevent unintentional setting of the packer.

The resilient element is adapted to seal off an annulus of the well when compressed, and the housing is adapted to compress the resilient element in response to a pressure exerted by fluid of the annulus of a piston head of the housing. The housing includes a port for establishing fluid communication with the annulus. The rupture disc is adapted to prevent the fluid in the annulus from entering the port and contacting the piston head until the pressure exerted by the fluid exceeds a predefined threshold and ruptures the rupture disc.
