  • Patent number: 7531591
Abstract: An aqueous dispersion includes an associative thickener based on a hydrophobically modified poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) (HM-PAPE) and at least one viscosity reducing agent selected from ethoxylated alcohols, ethoxylated acetyleneic diols, phosphate esters, dialkyl sulfosuccinates, and mixtures thereof. This aqueous dispersion improves the incorporation of the HM-PAPEs into aqueous based protective coatings. This dispersion also improves water-borne coating compositions that optionally contain latex.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 8, 2005
Date of Patent: May 12, 2009
    Assignee: Hercules Incorporated
Inventors: Kirill N. Bakeev, James G. Binder, Theo Klootwijk, Dirk Kruythoff, Betty Maagdenberg-Roels, Tuyen T. Nguyen, Jeffrey K. Politis, Willimlen G. Salomons

  • Patent number: 5834538
Abstract: A pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA) composition includes a latex system of an aqueous polymer dispersion derived from ethylenically-unsaturated monomers in the presence of a water soluble protective colloid. The PSA compositions are used in the manufacture of a variety of articles that are intended to be easily attachable to another substrate by the application of pressure alone.

  • Patent number: 5795928
Abstract: A process is provided for preparing an acrylic copolymer latex having improved mechanical and shear stability comprising emulsion polymerizing at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having up to 23 carbons in the presence of, by weight based on the total monomer content, a) from about 0.05% to about 5.0% of a protective colloid with a molecular weight of less than 75,000, and b) from about 0.01% to about 1.5% of at least one water soluble free radical polymerization initiator. This latex provides coating manufacturers the flexibility of either eliminating surfactants altogether from coating or to use small amounts thereof.

  • Patent number: 5494509
Abstract: A paper coating composition is provided having a clay-containing pigment system, a binder, a polysaccharide thickener, and at least 0.005% to 2%, based upon the weight of the polymer, of a blocking agent that serves to prevent more than 25% of the polysaccharide thickener from being adsorbed onto the clay pigment surface. This coating is applied to raw paper for producing a high quality paper with smooth and substantially free of indentations surfaces for good ink to paper transfer.
