Abstract: A device and method for displaying a list in a portable terminal having a touch pad are provided. The portable terminal includes an input unit for generating a sweep event; a speed-determining unit for checking speed of the sweep event and setting a scroll speed corresponding to the speed of the sweep event; a controller for controlling scrolling through items on a list according to the scroll speed; and a display for displaying the scrolled items on the list under the control of the controller. Therefore, the list scroll can be easily performed according to the inputted sweep event.

Abstract: Disclosed is a device and method for providing a quick menu in a menu screen of a mobile communication terminal. The method and device allow a user to more easily utilize the menu frequently employed in menu screen, and to execute the functions of the quick menu. The method for providing a quick menu in a menu screen of the mobile communication terminal displaying many menu items, which includes, if there is a move of a focus marking the menu item according to the user's input, displaying an auxiliary display area, which displays at least one shortcut menu item for the purpose of carrying out the quick menu corresponding to the menu item in which the focus is located; checking whether the user selects the shortcut menu item in the auxiliary display area; and converting the current screen into the screen for executing the selected shortcut menu item, if there is a selection of the shortcut menu item as a result of checking.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for user interface are disclosed that include: a display unit for displaying, in response to a request for a lower menu level of a specific menu item, at least one menu item of the requested lower menu level; a menu determiner for determining existence of a lower level menu item of a displayed menu item; an input interface unit for inputting a scroll event from the touchpad; an event processor for moving, in response to input of a scroll event, a highlight between displayed menu items; and a controller for controlling, if a highlighted menu item has a lower menu level, a display operation to simultaneously display the highlighted menu item and lower-level menu items, and to place the highlight on a lower-level menu item.

Abstract: Provided is a method for displaying a background image in a mobile communication terminal. The method includes storing a predetermined image as background image depending on user's selection, storing position information of vertical screen frame and horizontal screen frame on the background image, and setting the background image; displaying an image of a region associated with the vertical screen frame among the background image, as background image, in response to a request for displaying a display screen of the mobile communication terminal in vertical direction; and displaying an image of a region associated with the horizontal screen frame among the background image, as background image, in response to a request for displaying the display screen of the mobile communication terminal in horizontal direction.

Abstract: A mobile terminal with a function for setting an output volume of an audio signal to prevent acoustic shock is disclosed. In the mobile terminal, a receiver is integrated into a speaker. The speaker limits the initial output volume of an audio signal to a predetermined level. The mobile terminal provides a menu for setting an output volume of an audio signal. The menu enables a user to select either to maintain the currently limited volume level or to change to a volume level set for a speaker mode. Since an audio signal received with the connection of an incoming call is output at a predetermined reference volume level, acoustic shock caused by unexpectedly high-level of sound volume can be prevented.

Abstract: A method of displaying file information in an apparatus for displaying file information in a portable terminal using a multi-layered file system includes the steps of: determining whether a layer of a newly activated file is one-level higher or lower than before; and displaying a layer position of the newly activated file by reducing one of existing icons if the layer of the newly activated file is one-level higher than before and displaying one more icon if the layer of the newly activated file is one-level lower than before.
