  • Patent number: 5174529
Abstract: An improved ram air, multi-cell wing type canopy with suspension flares has its lower surface shortened to provide an enlarged inlet; one flare is directly attached to its upper surface. A modification has a channel provided to direct air flow over the upper surface. Scoops under the lower surface at the rear end provide protection against the canopy uncontrollably folding under.

  • Patent number: 4930726
Abstract: A built-in control flap for a ram air, multi-cell, wing type canopy having a ram air inlet is located in each side of the canopy at the rear portion thereof. Each built-in control flap is separated from the adjacent center portion of the canopy between the control flaps. A seal and guide of a sheet of flexible material connects the top of each control flap to the bottom of the adjacent center portion of the canopy across the separation for directing air flow thereby when a control flap is down. Each control flap receives air flow from the ram air inlet.

  • Patent number: 4729530
Abstract: A control for a multi-cell ram air wing type canopy includes rearwardly extending plain flexible control flaps at the trailing edge thereof, one control flap being positioned at each side. A control line is connected to each rearwardly extending control flap to place it in a desired position for proper flight. A containment device can be fixed to the canopy for containing each control flap when its extension rearwardly is not desired. A safety device is included to hold a control line so that a predetermined force is required to release the control line for pulling a control flap from its containment device. An edge pocket is included in each control flap for increased stabilization of control. A control line support and guide arrangement provides for ease of canopy control.

  • Patent number: 4465010
Abstract: A sail having a built-in-pocket and its method of construction is disclosed. A sail having foot and luff measurements and a desired angle at the finally formed tack is formed from sail material and has a built-in-pocket at a desired location. In forming the sail, the luff is pivoted forwardly on sail material about its upper edge to a sail forming position and the foot is pivoted downwardly on sail material about its rearward edge to a sail forming position; the amount that the bottom edge of the luff is moved forwardly determines the depth of the pocket; a first edge is formed between the moved end of the luff and a desired point providing the location of the center of the pocket; a second edge, equal to the first edge, is formed between the moved end of the foot and the desired point, the mating edges are fixed together, such as by sewing.

  • Patent number: 4270714
Abstract: A parachute canopy is formed of a plurality of gores with three types of gore configurations; a base gore having a multiplicity of cells; a rotational control gore having a crown cell and skirt cell; and a directional gore having a crown cell. The crown is inverted by use of a cell construction and a central cap is located at the top of the crown. This central cap is reinforced so a pilot chute can be attached thereto. A crown is also shown having triangular panels which can be opened.

  • Patent number: 3972495
Abstract: An aerial device in the form of a wing having upper and lower flexible layers and a leading edge and a trailing edge, a wall of the wing having an opening facing outward from the bottom or a side of the wing forming an inlet for flow of pressurized air into the wing, and a normally open flexible valve for the opening closeable by the air pressure to seal the opening when pressurized air is admitted to the wing.
