    Abstract: A protective garment, such as a firefighting garment, is provided that is relatively lightweight, possesses relatively high resistance to liquid water absorption, and also possesses high moisture vapor transport characteristics when compared to conventional firefighter garments. The garment of the present invention comprises at least an outer shell, and thermal liner positioned within the outer shell. A discrete moisture barrier layer is not required, but is utilized in certain embodiments. At least the insulating material of the thermal liner is treated with a durable, water repellant finish to reduce the amount of moisture absorbed by the thermal liner. Preferably, the outer shell, and optionally, the fabric substrate of the thermal liner may also be treated with a durable, water repellant finish to minimize liquid transfer therethrough.

    Abstract: A protective garment including an outer shell, a thermal liner and a moisture barrier, in which the thermal liner includes a flame and heat resistant apertured closed-cell foam laminate. The apertured closed-cell foam laminate comprises a layer of apertured closed-cell foam material positioned between and bonded to a substrate of woven aramid material and a substrate of aramid material of a lesser or equal grade. The thermal liner is appreciably non-moisture absorbent and provides high thermal insulation for its weight and thickness in comparison to prior art thermal liners. Accordingly, the overall weight of the garment is minimized, as is the movement-restricting effect of the liner. The non-absorbency of the thermal liner allows the liner to be positioned between the moisture barrier and the outer shell of the garment so that the liner does not restrict flow of perspiration moisture vapor from the wearer to the moisture barrier.

    Abstract: A firefighter garment which includes an outer shell, a thermal layer and a combination moisture barrier and facecloth. In the preferred embodiment, the combination moisture barrier and facecloth layer includes a semi-permeable component, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, which is attached to a facecloth material of a high lubricity filament yarn. The semi-permeable component functions as a moisture barrier and the filament yarn component provides a low friction interface between the garment and its wearer, thereby reducing heat stress imposed on the wearer of the garment during firefighting activity. The filament component also functions as a substrate for the moisture barrier. In the preferred embodiment, the thermal liner includes a layer of apertured flame and heat resistant unicellular or closed cell foam which is positioned between the outer shell and the combination moisture barrier and facecloth.

    Abstract: A lightweight thermal liner suitable for use with a garment which provides thermal protection for the garment without the stiffness and bulk of conventional prior art thermal liners. In a preferred embodiment, the thermal liner includes a fabric substrate and a layer of relatively incompressible, lightweight insulating beads bonded to the substrate. The insulating beads are spaced on the substrate in a spaced array and create an insulating air space between the substrate and an adjacent layer of material in the garment. Also in a preferred embodiment, the thermal liner is made of flame and heat resistant material such as aramid or PBI fibers.

    Abstract: A firefighter garment having an outer shell and an inner liner functioning as a combined thermal barrier and moisture barrier made of a fire-retardant, closed-cell foam material. The closed-cell foam liner is moisture resistant and at the same time provides adequate thermal insulation. The moisture resistance of the foam liner eliminates the need for a separate moisture barrier, and, in one embodiment, allows the liner to be bonded directly to the outer shell. However, in a preferred embodiment, the inner liner is separate from the shell and includes a fabric substrate of an aramid fiber to which it is bonded. The fabric substrate faces the wearer and prevents abrasion of the foam by the wearer and enhances the tear strength of the foam. Such closed-cell foam material may be used either as a continuous thermal barrier extending throughout the garment and/or in selected areas which require additional padding or thermal resistance.

    Abstract: Firefighters' suspenders having limited-stretch capability and constructed of permanently fire-resistant materials are provided. The suspenders have a plurality of elastic straps, having first and second ends, and are constructed of fibers containing an elastic core, a fire-resistant intermediate layer wrapped around the elastic core, and a permanently fire-resistant outer layer wrapped around the elastic core and intermediate layer. These fibers are woven in a crosslinked pattern with a permanently fire-resistant yarn. Joined collectively to the first ends of the elastic straps are the first ends of at least two nonelastic straps comprising a permanently fire-resistant fabric. The second ends of the elastic and nonelastic straps contain clips for fastening the suspenders to the pants of firefighters. The elastic straps give the suspenders limited-stretch capability.

    Abstract: A work garment having a waist portion covering a lower back area of a wearer and a front closure, and a support member, attached to the garment, for supporting a lumbar region of the wearer. The support member preferably includes a plurality of elastic bands extending about the waist portion of the garment and having complementary closure members positioned adjacent to the front closure of the work garment, and a contact member, attached to the elastic straps, positioned to contact the lumbar region of the wearer. In one embodiment, the elastic straps are integral with the work garment, which may be a coverall, and in other embodiments with firefighter garments such as a jacket, pant, and girdle. In one embodiment, the contact member consists of a resilient pad centered in the lumbar area of the wearer, and in another embodiment, the contact member consists of a plurality of elongate, vertically-extending stays.

    Abstract: An arrangement for supporting a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) on a firefighter's turnout coat includes a vest-type garment composed of a back panel and shoulder and waist straps attached to respective upper and lower portions of the back panel. Releasable coupling devices are connected to the ends of the shoulder and waist straps for detachably connecting the respective ends together to tightly secure the vest-type garment on the wearer. The back panel of the garment can be secured to either the inside or the outside of the back of an outer protective shell of the coat. The shoulder and waist straps of the vest-type garment are located internally of an inner liner of the coat by extending from the back panel of the vest-type garment through slots in the inner liner. The SCBA supporting arrangement also includes an elongated flexible pouch mounted in the center of the exterior of the back of the outer shell of the coat for holding an air bottle of the SCBA.

    Abstract: An improved suspender support arrangement for firefighter's trousers provides more even support for the inner liner and the outer shell of turnout pants. First fasteners, buttons or studs in two illustrated embodiments, are secured to the waist area of the inner liner of the turnout pants for receiving loop fasteners of a set of suspenders. Second fasteners, buttons or sockets in the two illustrated embodiments, are secured to the waist area of the outer shell of the turnout pants at a plurality of locations therearound. The second fasteners are aligned with and receive the first fasteners such that the set of suspenders supports both the inner liner and the outer shell of the turnout pants. In a third embodiment, suspenders are affixed to the inner liner which is in turn removably attached to the outer shell. The apparatus ensures that the turnout pants include an inner liner since the set of suspenders cannot be secured to the turnout pants without an inner liner.

    Abstract: A firefighter garment comprises an outer shell made of a flame-resistant material, a moisture barrier positioned within the shell and an inner thermal barrier layer positioned within the shell and including at least one layer of a mesh fabric. The mesh fabric creates a layer of air between the wearer and the outer shell sufficient to protect the wearer from a high temperature external heat source and yet promotes heat and perspiration vapor transfer from the wearer's body. In a preferred embodiment, the inner thermal barrier layer includes two layers of mesh material, the material having between 8 and 16 holes per inch, quilted to a facecloth material which is located facing the wearer's body.
