  • Patent number: 7558273
Abstract: Methods and systems for associating and translating VLAN tags are disclosed. In one implementation, multiple different member VLAN tags are associated with a translation VLAN tag. When a frame addressed to an unknown MAC address and containing one of the member VLAN tags is received, the frame is flooded to the translation VLAN and to ports associated with the source member VLAN other than the originating port. In the copy sent to the translation VLAN, the VLAN tag is replaced with the tag of the translation VLAN, for tagged ports. For untagged ports, the input VLAN tag may simply be stripped from the frames. When a layer 2 frame addressed to an unknown MAC address and containing the translation VLAN tag is received, the layer 2 frame is flooded to each of the member VLANs and to ports of the translation VLAN other than the originating port. The VLAN tag in the frames forwarded to each of the member VLANs may be replaced with the VLAN tag corresponding to each member VLAN, for tagged ports.

  • Patent number: 7483370
Abstract: Methods and systems for hitless switch management module failover and upgrade are disclosed. According to one method, a master switch management module participates in network protocols and performs packet forwarding operations. The master switch management module distributes protocol state and packet forwarding information to the slave switch management module. The slave switch management module continuously monitors the operational state of the master switch management module. In response to detecting failure of the master switch management module or a forced failover initiated by the user interface on the master switch management module, the slave switch management module begins network protocol operation in the master mode in a state where the master switch management module last operated correctly.

  • Publication number: 20080301319
Abstract: The subject matter described herein includes methods and systems for providing accidental stack join protection. According to one embodiment, a method includes connecting stacking ports of a first switch that is a member of a first stack and a second switch that is a member of a second stack and thereby joining the first and second stacks. The configurations of the first stack and of the second stack are detected and it is determined whether the detected configurations indicate a configuration mismatch between the first and second stacks. In response to determining that the detected configurations relate to a mismatch, the automatic joining of the first and second stacks is inhibited and the first and second stacks are allowed to continue switching traffic with their existing configurations.

  • Patent number: 7362700
Abstract: A method for hitless restart of layer 3 packet forwarding includes replicating some but not all state information from a master management service module to a slave management service module. The master management service module builds a layer 3 routing table by participating in layer 3 routing protocols. The layer 3 routing table is stored in memory. The master management service module builds a first layer 3 forwarding table and stores the forwarding information in hardware. A slave management service module receives a copy of the first layer 3 forwarding table from the master management service module. When the master management service module fails, the slave management service module initiates construction of a routing table by participating in layer 3 routing protocols. Packet forwarding is not interrupted because forwarding using hardware entries continues. The slave management service module links entries in the newly constructed routing table to those stored in the forwarding table.

  • Patent number: 6956816
Abstract: A working router is coupled to a SONET add-drop multiplexor (ADM) through a working line and a protection router is coupled to the ADM through a protection line. The routers are coupled to each other by a separate side-band connection and comprise a virtual router from the perspective of the neighboring router, which communicates with the virtual router over the SONET network using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). The protection router transmits a heartbeat message to the working router over the side-band connection. If the protection router does not receive a response thereto, it initiates a line switch within the add-drop multiplexor. Once the line switch is complete, the protection router exchanges datagrams with the neighboring router, via the ADM and SONET ring to which the ADM is coupled. The protection router establishes a PPP connection between itself and the neighboring router device coupled to the SONET ring, utilizing the Link Control Protocol (LCP).
