Patent number: 6817461Abstract: A clutch mechanism for a marine propulsion system has a cam member that is rotatable about a first axis in coordination with the rotation of a shift shaft. A cam follower is associated with the cam member and supported for axial movement along a second axis. The cam follower is provided with cam follower surface segments that cause the cam follower to move axially in a direction parallel to the second axis in response to rotation of the cam member about the first axis between first and second rotational positions. Further rotation of the cam member from the second rotational position to a third rotational position causes no further movement of the cam follower because of the shape and position of cam follower surface segments that allow continual contact between the cam member and the cam follower while allowing rotation of the cam member without associated axial movement of the cam follower.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2003Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: Brunswick CorporationInventors: Kass W. Sawyer, Donald F. Harry, John A. Tuchscherer

Patent number: 6544083Abstract: A gear shift mechanism is provided in which a cam structure comprises a protrusion that is shaped to extend into a channel formed in a cam follower structure. The cam follower structure can be provided with first and second channels that allow the protrusion of the cam to be extended into either which accommodates both port and starboard shifting mechanisms. The cam surface formed on the protrusion of the cam moves in contact with a selected cam follower surface formed in the selected one of two alternative channels to cause the cam follower to move axially and to cause a clutch member to engage with either a first or second drive gear.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2002Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: Brunswick CorporationInventors: Kass W. Patent number: 6478543Abstract: A torque transmitting device for use in conjunction with a marine propulsion system provides an adapter that is attached in torque transmitting relation with a propulsor shaft for rotation about a central axis of rotation. The first insert portion is attached in torque transmitting relation with the adapter and a second insert portion is attached in torque transmitting relation with a hub of the propulsor hub which can be a marine propeller or an impeller. A third insert portion is connected between the first and second insert portions and is resilient in order to allow the first and second insert portions to rotate relative to each other about the central axis of rotation. The adapter is shaped to prevent compression of the first, second, and third insert portions in a direction parallel to the central axis of rotation.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2001Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: Brunswick CorporationInventors: John A. Patent number: 6068529Abstract: An improved twin propeller marine propulsion unit. A vertical drive shaft is journaled in the lower gearcase and drives a pair of bevel gears. A pair of concentric propeller shafts are mounted in the lower torpedo section of the gearcase and each shaft carries a propeller. A slidable clutch is movable between a neutral, a forward, and a reverse position and serves to operably connect the outer propeller shaft with one of the bevel gears when the clutch is moved to the forward drive position. A gear is mounted for sliding movement in unison with the clutch and acts to operably engage the inner propeller shaft with the second bevel gear when the clutch is in the forward drive position so that both propellers are driven in opposite directions to provide forward motion for the watercraft.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1999Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Assignee: Brunswick CorporationInventors: Robert B. Weronke, Michael A. Karls, Roger E. Koepsel, Donald F. Harry

Patent number: 5890938Abstract: A marine propulsion system with counter-rotating propellers is provided with the capability of causing the propellers to rotate at different speeds. A first gear is attached to an inner propeller shaft and a second gear is attached to an outer propeller shaft. The inner and outer propeller shafts are arranged in coaxial and concentric relation for rotation about an axis of rotation. A driveshaft is connected to a pinion gear which engages the teeth of the fore and aft gears at different effective diameters. The pinion gear meshes with a first plurality of gear teeth on a beveled surface of the fore gear while a second set of gear teeth of the pinion gear mesh with a second plurality of gear teeth on a beveled surface of the aft gear. Because of the different effective diameters of the first and second pluralities of gear teeth, the inner and outer shafts rotate at different speeds.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Brunswick CorporationInventors: Edward C.
