  • Patent number: 4090971
Abstract: Amides of alkyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acids (especially alkyl-substituted salicylic acids) and the like, in which the alkyl substituent contains at least about 10 carbon atoms, are useful as dispersant additives for lubricants and fuels. Particularly useful are salicylamides in which the substituent is derived from propylene, 1-butene or isobutene and has a molecular weight of about 150-1750, and in which the amide moiety is derived from an alkylene polyamine. Such amides are preferably prepared by the reaction of the corresponding nitrogen-containing compound with a vic-hydroxyalkyl ester of the salicylic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 16, 1975
Date of Patent: May 23, 1978
    Assignee: The Lubrizol Corporation
    Inventor: Donald Irvin Hoke
  • Patent number: 4058469
Abstract: Compositions useful as lubricants and functional fluids comprise an oleaginous liquid of lubricating viscosity, typically a mineral oil, and an oxygen-, sulfur- or nitrogen-containing polyfunctional nitrile. The preferred nitriles are cyanoethylation products of alcohols, mercaptans and amines, and especially of alcohols. The polyfunctional nitrile serves as a seal swelling agent and/or demulsifier.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 5, 1975
Date of Patent: November 15, 1977
    Assignee: The Lubrizol Corporation

  • Patent number: 4032461
Abstract: Compounds corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## wherein each R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is, independently, a member selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon-based, hydrocarbon-based oxy, and hydrocarbon-based thio; R.sub.3 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, and substituted lower alkyl; and X is a member selected from the group consisting of oxygen and sulfur, are disclosed. These compounds are useful as a lubricant additive, and have insecticidal and pesticidal properties.

  • Patent number: 3991079
Abstract: Compositions made by reacting (A) an acylated amino hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid having an acyl portion containing a substantially saturated hydrocarbyl substituent of at least about 12 carbon atoms and bonded to the amino hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid through an acyl, acylimidoyl or acyloxy linkage, (B) a heterocyclic reagent such as an epoxide, episulfide or aziridine and (C) an amino compound having about 1 to about 400 carbon atoms or an organo-sulfide having 2 to about 50 carbon atoms are useful in fuels and lubricants as dispersants, anti-static agents and corrosion inhibitors.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 31, 1975
Date of Patent: November 9, 1976
    Assignee: The Lubrizol Corporation

  • Patent number: 3979441
Abstract: Oil-soluble polymers of N-3-aminoalkyl acrylamides, especially N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-dimethylaminopropyl)acrylamide, are obtained by copolymerization with a monomer (especially an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate) containing an alkyl group with at least about 8 carbon atoms. These polymers are useful as dispersants and viscosity modifiers for lubricants.

  • Patent number: 3943114
Abstract: N-3-Aminoalkyl propionamides with an ether substituent on the beta carbon atom are prepared by the reaction of analogous N-3-oxohydrocarbon-substituted amides with an amine in the presence of a reducing agent, preferably hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst. The resulting compounds can be converted to acrylamides by pyrolysis in the presence of a strong base. The latter compounds may also be prepared by the reaction of a .beta.,.gamma.-unsaturated amine with an acrylonitrile in the presence of sulfuric acid. They are useful for improving dyeability of fiber-forming polymers and may be polymerized to form compositions which are useful in paper manufacture and (in their quaternized form) are excellent flocculants.
