  • Patent number: 4534725
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for imparting a desired shape to a paperboard blank. The blank is formed between two dies for a sufficient length of time and with sufficient force to set the form, while moving the dies in tandem along a predetermined portion of a reciprocation path. Because the formed blank remains in dwell while the dies are moving in tandem, it is not necessary to hold the dies stationary to ensure permanent formation of the blank. This allows greater production speeds.

  • Patent number: 4376556
Abstract: A bearing arrangement for a wide variety of apparatus, such as machine tool tables, tool slides and carriages, wherein the bearing on one side of a movable element is preloaded by means of a hydraulic device forming a part of or connected to the opposing bearing on the other side of the movable element. A movable element, such as a machine tool table, is received in a support base having a lower guide surface and an upper guide surface. A roller-type bearing is secured to the table and bears against the guide surface which faces it, and, in this case, the last-mentioned guide surface is machined extremely flat and true relative to the tool. A second roller-type bearing is secured to the opposite side of the table and is urged against a guide surface by a hydraulic piston and cylinder. The hydraulic pressure which is developed presses the first roller bearing tightly against the respective guide surface and preloads the bearing so that the table will move with extreme accuracy relative to that surface.

  • Patent number: 4206699
Abstract: A bolster for a press, such as a mechanical press, which is capable of being easily retracted downwardly so as to increase the die separation thereby enabling easy access to the dies for maintenance. The bolster assembly includes a base mounted to the bed of the press, a bolster supported on the base and guided thereby for rectilinear movement in opposed relation to the bed and slide between an extended position for normal press operation, and a retracted position wherein the separation between the upper and lower dies is sufficient to permit easy access, and a hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement for rigidly holding the bolster in its extended position when charged with high pressure hydraulic fluid, yet permitting the bolster to retract when the hydraulic pressure is released.

  • Patent number: 4206701
Abstract: A lock mechanism for shutheight adjustment in a press having a frame with a crown and bed, a slide mounted for reciprocation toward and away from the bed, and a drive mechanism comprising one or more crankshaft driven connection screws for reciprocating the slide. The shutheight for the press is adjusted by means of a pair of internally threaded nuts on the threaded end portion of each of the connection screws, the nuts being connected to and carrying the slide. The nuts are keyed together so that they rotate in unison and are rotated by means of a worm mechanism turned either manually or by means of a motor. As the nuts rotate on their respective connection screws, the slide will be raised or lowered relative to the ram and to the bed of the press thereby adjusting the shutheight opening between the slide and bed. The adjustment mechanism is locked by means of a wedge-shaped split ring disposed between the nuts.
