  • Publication number: 20100081102
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention can include systems and methods for facilitating varying coal pipes for a pulverized coal burner. In one embodiment, a method for improving operation of a pulverized coal burner comprising at least one burner comprising at least one coal pipe having an inner diameter, and an outer diameter. The method can include installing at least one sleeve or at least one liner within the coal pipe between the inner and outer diameter of the coal pipe, wherein velocity of a primary air and pulverized coal mixture is increased in an upstream portion of the coal pipe. The method can also include reducing the at least one sleeve or liner, wherein velocity of the primary air and pulverized coal mixture is reduced in a downstream portion of the coal pipe.

  • Patent number: 7004086
Abstract: The boiler nose or arch of a furnace projects into the upwardly flowing flue gas to form a restricted passage. Overfire air is introduced into the cavity or plenum of the boiler nose and flows to injection ports along the inclined surface of the boiler nose to provide overfire air for penetration into and mixing with the flue gases in the restricted flue gas passage.

  • Patent number: 6799525
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling primary air flow and pulverized coal flow to a plurality of burners in a coal-fired boiler includes a plurality of coal dampers arranged to supply a mixture of air and pulverized coal to respective burners in the coal-fired boiler, each damper having a damper body and at least two orifice plates pivotally secured therein, the orifice plates movable between open and closed positions; a real time coal flow monitoring device operatively associated with each damper that is adapted to generate analog signals representing real time coal flow through its respective damper; and a programmable logic controller adapted to receive the analog signals and to adjust the orifice plates to balance the flow of air and pulverized coal to each of the plurality of burners.

  • Patent number: 5967061
Abstract: A method and system is provided for the reduction of nitrogen and sulfur oxides emissions from carbonaceous fuel combustion flue gases. The method includes the injection of coal water slurry as a reburn fuel into furnace flue gases to partially oxidize the coal water slurry thereby producing reducing gas species in a reburn zone that convert flue gas nitrogen oxides to diatomic nitrogen. Optionally, sulfur oxides may also be removed from the flue gas by adding alkali compounds to the coal water slurry before injecting the slurry into the furnace, or by injecting the alkali compounds separately into the reducing reburn zone in the furnace created by the partial oxidation of the coal water slurry reburn fuel. The alkali compounds react with the sulfur species to produce alkali sulfite and sulfate particulate solids, which can be removed in a downstream particulate removal device such as an electrostatic precipitator or bag house.
