Publication number: 20040175121Abstract: A system is provided in which an interactive television program guide is implemented on user television equipment. Potentially objectionable material such as the titles and descriptions of adult programs may be blocked. When adult program listing blocking is invoked, the program guide replaces adult program listings with unobjectionable material such as a blank region, a generic unobjectionable program listing, or an unobjectionable title based on the channel being blocked. The user may invoke blocking of titles, descriptions, or both titles or descriptions. Blocking may be based on the rating of the program listings. Access may be provided to blocked program listings by entering a parental control code. The user may temporarily disable adult program listing blocking. The user may also set parental control locks for any type of potentially objectionable programming and may temporarily disable such locks.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 16, 2004Publication date: September 9, 2004Applicant: United Video Properties, Inc.Inventors: Michael D. Ellis, Donald W. Allison, Connie T. Marshall, Thomas R. Lemmons

Publication number: 20040128686Abstract: An Internet television program guide system is provided that allows a user at a multimedia system to access information related to television programs over an Internet communications link. The user can view television program guide listings and related video stills and video clips. The user can perform database searches on the program guide listings (e.g., to search for a particular type of television program). If desired, the user can select an option that directs the multimedia system to tune directly to a television channel for a selected program or to a related television program guide or movie guide service on a television channel. The user can order pay-per-view events using the system.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2003Publication date: July 1, 2004Applicant: United Video Properties, Inc., a corporation of DelawareInventors: Franklin E. Boyer, Timothy B. Demers, Donald W. Allison, Mark A. Regouby, Steven C. Williamson, Joanna L. Hensley, W. Benjamin Herrington, Paul N. Reddy

Publication number: 20040078815Abstract: Interactive program guide systems and related processes are provided which can automatically tune a television, or program a VCR, based on program selections made from program schedule information displayed on a television or other suitable video monitor. The interactive program guide is preferably implemented using a microprocessor-controlled set-top box that is coupled to the viewer's television set. The set-top box receives program schedule information and software from a headend telecasting center. Preferably, program schedule information for the current day and at least six subsequent days is stored in a memory within the set-top box. The interactive program guide provides a display mode for allowing the viewer to apply a restrictive search selection criterion and a nonrestrictive sort attribute to the program schedule information.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2003Publication date: April 22, 2004Inventors: Thomas R. Lemmons, Donald W. Allison, Jerry D. Henshaw, Connie T. Marshall

Publication number: 20040045024Abstract: A system interactively controlled by a TV viewer remote control transmitter displays portions of a scroll program guide on the viewer's display screen. A tuner receives TV radio frequency or optical transmission signals in a plurality of cable channels and passes a viewer usable signal to a signal combiner. A computer receives control signals from the TV viewer remote control transmitter. It controls the tuner to pass the viewer usable signal in response to one of the control signals. It receives and stores a scroll input picture image signal containing local program guide data and generates a scroll output picture image signal consisting of at least a portion of the scroll input picture image signal. The signal combiner combines the viewer usable signal from the tuner with the output picture image signal from the computer to provide a display signal for input to the viewer's display screen.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 3, 2003Publication date: March 4, 2004Applicant: United Video Properties, Inc.Inventors: Connie T. Patent number: 6564379Abstract: An interactive television program guide is provided in which advertisements may be displayed in program listings display regions on program guide screens. The program listings display regions may be browse displays or flip displays. The program guide screens contain video for the current channel to which the user is tuned. The program listings display regions containing the advertisements may be overlaid on top of the current channel. Alternatively, the video for the current channel may be provided in a reduced-size video window. The advertisements may contain video. The advertisements may be used to promote television programs and conventional goods and services. Advertisements may be selectable. When a user selects an advertisement, the program guide provides the user with an opportunity to order products or services, request information, set reminders for upcoming programs, view program descriptions, record programs, or take other such actions.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1998Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: United Video Properties, Inc.Inventors: Edward B. Patent number: 6542169Abstract: An interactive system controlled by a TV viewer remote control transmitter that displays portions of a scroll grid program guide on the viewer's display screen is provided. The system is responsive to variable control signals from a remote to advance, back up, and freeze a scroll output picture image signal. It is also responsive to directional control signals from the remote to reposition a “highlight” background to corresponding program data slots on a scroll grid and to display further program information corresponding to the program of the data slot shown in “highlight.” In addition, it is responsive to further directional control signals to redraw the grid to display earlier or later time segment program data than is normally displayed on the viewer's screen.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 2000Date of Patent: April 1, 2003Assignee: United Video Properties, Inc.Inventors: Connie T. Patent number: 6419137Abstract: A system interactively controlled by a TV viewer remote control transmitter displays, on demand by the viewer and on the viewer's display screen, descriptive data and a video clip related to a program identified on the program guide. A tuner receives TV radio frequency or optical transmission signals in a plurality of cable channels and passes a viewer usable signal of any selected one of the channels to a signal combiner. A computer receives any of a plurality of control signals from the TV viewer remote control transmitter. It also controls the tuner to pass the viewer usable signal of any selected channel in response to one of the control signals from the TV viewer remote control transmitter. It also receives and stores an input picture image signal containing local program guide data and descriptive data and video clips related to selected ones of the programs identified in the program guide data.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1999Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: United Video Properties, Inc.Inventors: Connie T.
