  • Patent number: 5606533
Abstract: A ranging and data taking system, useful as an acoustic sediment classification system. The system launches acoustic pulses into a water column above a sediment bed of interest (seafloor, riverbed, etc.) and records echoes from the pulses. The recorded echoes are transmitted to a processor, which uses the echoes to classify the sediment. Disposed between the hardware for data acquisition, and the processor, is S-RAM (static read only memory). This decouples data acquisition and data processing, which increases the speed of the system sufficiently that the system can display processed data, such as sediment contour plots, in virtual real time.

  • Patent number: 5559754
Abstract: A computer driven system which receives time-binned echo strength data, and hich, for each series of echo strengths received, stores the echo strength data in computer memory, and automatically associates with that data the latitude, longitude and time at which the data were generated. From these data, the algorithm classifies the sediments, which produced the echo strengths, determining such parameters as sediment acoustic impedance, porosity, attenuation, grain size, density, acoustic velocity, and shear strength. System software can produce additional result files in which these properties are associated with corresponding echo strength data. Both the raw and reduced data are displayable in human readable form, preferably on a computer monitor, for operator review. System software can also generate navigation plots which trace on a map, preferably on computer monitor, points at which data are taken, and the bottom sediment at those points.

  • Patent number: 3971947
Abstract: An ultraviolet water purifier having a plurality of ultraviolet lamps mounted in a cover extending over the purifier and above the water in the purifier with a parabolic reflector directing the rays of the lamps toward the body of water. The purifier is provided with a water inlet and a baffle adjacent thereto having an opening at its base to compel the water entering the purifier to flow directly downwardly and then to flow through a plurality of filter. Air bubbles are trapped by a second baffle extending downwardly from the cover to below the water level.
