Patent number: 5550731Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing a databus voter to select the command signals from one of several redundant asynchronous digital processing units finds particular application in the flight control art. Asynchronous, triple redundant primary flight computers (PFC's) (12, 14, 16) produce output command signals carried over a data buses (18) to control redundant actuators (32, 34, 36) in an aircraft flight control system. To prevent the transmission of a fault and a force fight among the redundant actuators, which drive a common aircraft control surface (50), a databus voter (52, 54, 56) associated with each PFC receives all PFC commands and, in accordance with a selection algorithm, outputs a voted one of the PFC command signals. A databus voter monitor, (144) associated with each databus voter, deactivates its associated databus voter if it detects a voted command signal which is inconsistent with the selection algorithm.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1995Date of Patent: August 27, 1996Inventor: Douglas O'Brien Jackson

Patent number: 4759973Abstract: A semi-foamed polyethylene tape for use in the molding of foamed jacket pethylene cables. After tumble mixing low density foaming polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate co-polymer and polyethylene color concentrate, the tape is extruded on a thermoplastic extruder having a maddox mixing screw that effectively mixes polyethylene compounds and a slot die with a suitable opening dimension. The tape is then quenched. By controlling manufacturing variables the tape is foamed to 40% to 50% of its maximum. The tape is then foamed to 100% maximum during the manufacturing of a cable assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1986Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Raymond J. Phillips, Douglas O'Brien

Patent number: 4414621Abstract: An interactive visual communications system consists of a number of similar terminals linked together by narrow band communications links. Each terminal consists of visual display apparatus having a display and a display generator, an input interactive device for providing input instructions which are converted to graphic task instructions at the terminal, a processor for processing such graphic task instructions (GTI's) to control the display system and the input interactive device. The generated graphic task instructions are directed through an interaction handler which directs the GTI's to the processor as well as to a modem for transmission over the narrow band communications link to one or more similar terminals. In addition, the interaction handler receives GTI's from the other terminals which are also processed by the processor to control the display system. The display system may include a random vector display monitor or a raster graphic display monitor.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1981Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Assignee: Canadian Patents & Development Ltd.Inventors: Herbert G. Bown, C. Douglas O'Brien

Patent number: 4247767Abstract: Apparatus for detecting the position of an object, e.g. for interaction with a computer graphic display, has a number of light emitting diodes in an endless array, and a lesser number of light detecting devices for providing electrical signals in response to momentary and successive energization of the light emitting diodes. The signals are electronically processed to provide cartesian co-ordinates. This apparatus provides high resolution with a minimum number of light detecting devices and enables too large objects and malfunctions to be readily detected.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1978Date of Patent: January 27, 1981Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of National DefenceInventors: C.
