  • Patent number: 8280704
Abstract: The fragmentation of a bird or similar soft body, following its impact on an angled target plate, is modeled by representing the body as a combination of fragments and slurry, their relative proportions depending on the severity and angle of impact. The method is particularly suitable for modeling the behavior of a bird striking an obscuring intake of a gas turbine engine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 26, 2009
Date of Patent: October 2, 2012
    Assignee: Rolls-Royce PLC
    Inventors: Daniel N S Clark, Duncan A S Macdougall, Julian M Reed
  • Patent number: 8047136
Abstract: A projectile is provided for simulating multiple sequential ballistic impacts. The projectile has a plurality of relatively dense loading layers spaced along the firing direction of the projectile. Each pair of nearest-neighbor loading layers is separated by a less dense support element which maintains the spacing of the loading layers. The projectile may be suitable for simulating bird slurry impacts on stator vanes of an aero gas turbine engine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 7, 2009
Date of Patent: November 1, 2011
    Assignee: Rolls-Royce plc
Inventors: Duncan A. S. MacDougall, David Higginbottom
