Abstract: A document work set acts as a document container for items that are associated with a work product. A document work set is created from a document work set template that defines properties and workflows that are associated with the document work set. Metadata is shared between the items in the document work set and workflows may be associated with the document work set as well as the individual items within the work set. Instead of just providing a view of the items in the work set when accessed, information relating to the overall work product that is represented by the document work set is displayed.

Abstract: Document metadata is evaluated against rules to determine what action to perform on the document. The actions include routing the document to a specific location, returning a location of where the document is stored, executing custom code that is associated with the document and routing the document to another routing engine that applies a set of routing rules against the document.

Abstract: Detailed herein is a technology which, among other things, identifies and provides an audience-appropriate version of a document, upon request. In one approach to this technology, a request for the document is received at a document-specific access point associated with that document. This document request is associated with specific file access authorizations. These specific file access authorizations are used to identify one of the available versions of the document. The version of the document so identified is then retrieved.

Abstract: Techniques for clients and servers to use the web authoring extensions, and in particular, extended error handling to allow servers to provider richer web authoring error information to clients. One technique includes sending an authoring request to a server, receiving a response message with extended error information by a client, and sending the extended error information to an application program. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Abstract: A system and method is provided to automatically associate type-specific information with a document of a prescribed type. The type information includes instance-specific type information that can be instantiated to each document of the prescribed type. The type information also includes generic type information that is automatically applied to all documents of the prescribed type. Such generic type information includes policies that govern, for example, the life span of the documents or who can access the documents. Instance-specific type information can be demoted to and promoted from a document of the prescribed type. Generic type information can only be demoted to a document of the prescribed type. Type information may be demoted into a document only when the document is requested.
