  • Patent number: 7096500
Abstract: E-mail messages or computer files are scanned to identify embedded internet addresses. These embedded internet address 18 refer to data that may be retrieved via the internet. This data is pre-emptively retrieved and scanned for malware even though it has not been requested by a user. If the data is found to be malware-free, then a record of this is kept. If a user subsequently seeks to access the data associated with the embedded internet address, then the stored data may be referred to and if the internet address is found and the data associated with that address is unchanged since it was previously scanned, then that data may be supplied to the user without the need to be rescanned.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 21, 2001
Date of Patent: August 22, 2006
    Assignee: McAfee, Inc.
Inventors: Guy William Welch Roberts, Andrew Lewis Cole, Eamonn John Baulk
  • Patent number: 7023861
Abstract: A network bridge (14) has an associated malware scanner (16) that serves to concatenate portions of a data file from within data packets intercepted by the network bridge (14) and then scan the data file concerned before the data file is forwarded to its intended recipient by the network bridge (14). The network bridge (14) may be inserted in a network topology without requiring significant network configuration changes. The network bridge (14) may include a packet analysis unit (56) that serves to intercept only data packets having a predetermined network layer protocol or a predetermined application layer protocol.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 26, 2001
Date of Patent: April 4, 2006
    Assignee: McAfee, Inc.
Inventors: Graham Arthur Makinson, Eamonn John Baulk, Daniel Joseph Wolff
