  • Publication number: 20140121048
Abstract: Certain embodiments include a system having a first grip configured to couple to a first tubular, a second grip configured to couple to a second tubular, where the first and second tubulars are connected by a threaded connection, and a gear assembly coupling the first and second grips, wherein the gear assembly has a speed ratio greater than 1.

  • Publication number: 20140000912
Abstract: Present embodiments are directed to a top drive system comprising a hoisting assembly having an upper link, a lower link, and a first joint coupling the upper link and the lower link. The top drive system also includes a main body coupled to the hoisting assembly by a second joint, wherein the hoisting assembly is configured to support the main body, and the main body is configured to support a tubular. Further, the top drive system includes a frame coupled to the main body and a counter moment system configured to apply a force on the first joint to create a bending moment about the second joint.

  • Publication number: 20130161965
Abstract: A casing running tool is provided having both axial and circumferentially tapered elements. In certain embodiments, the casing running tool comprises cam structures that are circumferentially tapered so as to allow an applied torque to engage and disengage the casing running tool with a casing or liner. In embodiments, the circumferential taper of the cam structures allows a mandrel or rollers disposed between the mandrel and cam structures to apply radial force to corresponding shoe structures which in turn engage or disengage the casing or liner. The cam structures may also exhibit an axial taper to allow for a self-energized fail-sage operation of the casing running tool.

  • Publication number: 20130146360
Abstract: A resonant extractor system configured to use rotational energy provided by a top drive system to apply vertical oscillating motion to attached tubular or drilling equipment. The extractor includes a rotational component, an oscillation component, and an assembly of engagement features. The top drive system may rotate the rotational component about a vertical axis. In certain embodiments, the rotational component is a housing, the oscillation component is a quill, and the engagement features include a cam disposed on a shaft. The shaft is coupled to and extends radially into the housing, and the cam disposed on the shaft, which features an eccentric geometry relative the shaft, maintains contact with a lip extending from the quill in the housing. As the housing rotates, the eccentric cam rotates, raising and lowering the quill, which is configured to couple with tubular or drilling equipment.

  • Publication number: 20130146278
Abstract: A casing running tool is provided having a central mandrel with spiral wedge grooves, an outer cage having generally horizontal slots corresponding to the spiral wedge grooves, and grabber balls disposed between the spiral wedge grooves and the horizontal slots. Each of the spiral wedge grooves has a deeper end and a shallower end, between which the respective grabber balls roll. When a grabber ball is disposed in the shallower end of the respective spiral wedge groove, the grabber ball exerts a radial force against an inner wall of a casing or liner being supported. In addition, the running tool facilitates the application of torque from the running tool to the casing or liner being supported.
