  • Patent number: 4359111
Abstract: A self compensating seal apparatus is provided for forming a seal between two rotary members such as the body and cutting head of a rotary drill bit to seal the space between the members from an external environment. The seal apparatus comprises a first sealing device mounted in a first of the members and a second sealing device mounted in the second of the members, the first and second sealing devices being positioned opposite to and in contact with each other along a contact plane and forming a seal therebetween. A Belleville spring is fixedly mounted in the first member for producing a force on the first sealing device in a direction perpendicular to the contact plane such that the first sealing device is biased and held in contact with the second sealing device. A third sealing device seals the Belleville spring and the space between the first and second members from the external environment.

  • Patent number: 4351402
Abstract: A rotary drill bit for drilling a bore hole in the surface of the earth is provided in which the drill bit comprises a body having a duct therethrough for carrying drilling fluid. A conical cutting head having an axis at an acute angle with respect to the axis of the drill bit is mounted in the cutting head. An elongated nozzle is positioned at the end of the duct for injecting the drilling fluid into the bore hole. The nozzle has an opening which opens into the bore hole wherein the longitudinal center line of the opening follows the locus of the mid-point between the side wall of the bore hole and the outermost circumference of the cutting head. Drilling fluid injected through the nozzle removes detritus from between the teeth and the cutting head at the bottom of the bore hole. The body of the drill bit has a first portion having a truncated conical surface with the axis of the truncated cone coinciding with the axis of the cutting head.

  • Patent number: 4328873
Abstract: An automatic depth compensating system is provided for controlling the pressure in a volume such as the interior of a rotary drill bit in response to pressure changes in the environment adjacent to the volume. The system comprises at least one pressure compensating device positioned between the volume and the environment for changing the pressure in the volume in response to pressure changes in the environment. The system further includes a pressure surge compensating device which is positioned between the volume and the environment for compensating for positive and negative pressure surges when the pressure in the volume changes relative to the pressure in the environment.
