  • Patent number: 11098764
Abstract: A universal or constant velocity joint includes a first rotatable shaft member that extends along a longitudinal axis, a bearing member, and a joining member. The first rotatable shaft member has a free end that defines a shaft face spline. The bearing member includes a bearing hub having a first end, a second end, and a longitudinally extending hub bore. • Patent number: 9958015
Abstract: A rolling-element telescoping shaft assembly for connecting a driveshaft and transmitting a torque includes an outer shaft member extending along a longitudinal axis and defines an interior bore and inner surface. An inner shaft member is at least partially disposed within the bore and telescopically moveable relative thereto along the axis and defines an outer surface. Rolling-element outer grooves are arranged in the inner surface, distributed around the axis, and functional (i.e., used for transmitting a torque). Outer recesses are defined between the outer grooves and define a shorter distance between adjacent torque-transmitting outer grooves. Rolling-element inner grooves are defined on the outer surface and distributed around the axis. Rolling elements are rollingly arranged in the outer and inner grooves and rollingly engage the outer and inner shaft members during telescoping movement of the shaft assembly to reduce friction therebetween.

  • Publication number: 20170276185
Abstract: A tripot housing includes a housing body that extends between a first housing end and a second housing end along an axis. The housing body defines a guide channel that extends from the first housing end towards the second housing end. The guide channel has a first wall, a second wall, and a third wall that extends between the first wall and the second wall. At least one of the first wall, the second wall, and the third wall includes a selectively textured functional area.

  • Patent number: 9664236
Abstract: A constant velocity joint includes an outer member defining a plurality of outer member ball tracks and an inner member defining a plurality of inner member ball tracks. The outer member ball tracks and the inner member ball tracks cooperate to define a plurality of uniform funnels having a uniform width along a longitudinal axis, and a plurality of diverging funnels having a diverging width along the longitudinal axis. A drive ball is disposed within each of the uniform funnels and the diverging funnels. A cage is disposed between the outer member and the inner member, and defines a plurality of windows with one of the drive balls disposed within each of the windows. The diverging funnels urge the drive balls along the longitudinal axis to pre-load the cage, while the uniform funnels do not urge the drive balls along the longitudinal axis, thereby reducing the amount of heat generated between the cage and the drive balls.

  • Patent number: 8414405
Abstract: A fixed center constant velocity joint includes a first group of funnels and a second group of funnels arranged radially about a longitudinal axis in alternating relationship. The first group of funnels diverges in a first direction and the second group of funnels diverges in a second direction opposite the first direction along the longitudinal axis. The first group of funnels defines a first diverging width increasing in value along the longitudinal axis and the second group of funnels defines a second diverging width increasing in value at a different rate than the first diverging width to bias the joint in one of the first direction and the second direction.

  • Patent number: 7887423
Abstract: A universal joint includes an outer member defining an interior opening and a plurality of grooves within the opening extending along a longitudinal axis. An inner member is disposed within the opening and includes a plurality of pockets opposing the grooves. A drive ball is disposed within each pocket and engages the opposing groove. Each of the pockets and each of the grooves opposing the pockets include a central axis passing through a ball center of the drive balls. The drive balls are supported by the pockets and define a pocket contact angle. The drive balls are also supported by the grooves and define a groove contact angle. The pocket contact angle is less than the groove contact angle to urge the drive balls upward against the grooves.

  • Patent number: 7717793
Abstract: A fixed-center constant velocity joint has a race located concentrically to a rotational first axis, and a ring-shaped cage located concentrically to a rotational second axis. Both the race and the cage are centered to a common center point lying on the first and second axes regardless of the angular state of the joint. A spherical surface carried by the race radially opposes a spherical face carried by the cage for angular movement with respect to the center point. The surface and face are in close or contacting relationship to prevent telescoping movement with respect to the first and second axes.

  • Publication number: 20090017921
Abstract: A self-retained constant velocity joint has a ring-shaped cage disposed substantially concentrically to and spaced radially from a race of the joint. A plurality of grooves in and distributed circumferentially about the race preferably includes longitudinal, clockwise and counter-clockwise grooves that extend substantially axially and communicate radially through the arcuate surface. A ball is located in each groove and extends through respective windows in the cage. Preferably, the windows associated with the clockwise and counter-clockwise grooves extend circumferentially further than the windows associated with the longitudinal grooves. The cage carries an arcuate face that is one of a convex and concave profile and radially opposes the arcuate surface that is the other of the convex and concave profiles. The radial distance between the face and surface is such that axial movement between the race and cage is limited by intermittent contact of the face with the surface.

  • Publication number: 20050124422
Abstract: The present invention provides a stroking ball-type constant velocity joint including a plurality of straight grooves and a plurality of cross grooves. The straight and cross grooves can be disposed along the interior of the joint in alternating fashion. For example, a cross groove passageway can be positioned between two straight groove passageways. The inner joint member can include helical grooves extending in a right-hand direction and in a left-hand direction. The helical grooves can be disposed in alternating fashion such that a left-handed groove is disposed between two right-handed grooves.

  • Patent number: 6692364
Abstract: A constant velocity joint has an outer race, inner race, and balls interposed therebetween. The balls are seated in apertures of a cage. The inner wall profile of the cage has a cross section contour through the longitudinal axis that is radial about a radius that has its center origins offset from the center point of the cage along the ball center plane. The outer wall profile also has a cross sectional contour that is radial about a radius with its center also offset from the center point along the ball center plane of the cage and from the radial center of the inner wall radius.
