Patent number: 11963071Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, software, and apparatuses provide a system for controlling access to text messaging capabilities of a mobile computing device of a user while the user is driving. The mobile computing device may be configured to restrict a user from sending or receiving text messages while the user is driving depending on a current driving situation. Whether a user can send or receive text messages may further depend on a priority of the text message or a priority level of a sender or intended recipient of the text message. The system may include devices for collecting information regarding the vehicle and its surroundings and for determining the current driving situation based on the collected information. Further, the system may include devices for maintaining records of the restrictions placed on text messaging and of rewards earned for agreeing to be subject to such restrictions.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2021Date of Patent: April 16, 2024Assignee: ALLSTATE INSURANCE COMPANYInventors: Thomas J. Publication number: 20240062309Abstract: Systems and methods provide customizable insurance according to consumer preferences and attributes. An enhanced attributes analysis server may analyze the attributes of a consumer and match these attributes with attributes of current customers of an entity managing the server. The insurance products/plans preferred by the matched customers may then be used to present insurance options to the consumer. In addition, the server may further customize insurance options based on answers to questions that relate to the consumer's specific situation. Further still, the consumer's social network may be used to understand insurance products/plans that may be preferred by the consumer.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 1, 2023Publication date: February 22, 2024Inventors: Floyd M. Yager, THOMAS J. Wilson, Pablo Azar, Edward A. Biemer, Jeremy Frank, Mark David Pitchford, Robert Wasserman

Publication number: 20230325932Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, systems and apparatuses for determining and implementing risk unit based insurance policies are presented. A user may receive a plurality of risk units associated with an insurance policy. The risk units may be stored in a risk unit account associated with the user, the vehicle, etc. During operation of the vehicle, sensor data may be received. The sensor data may provide information associated with driving behaviors of the user, environmental conditions in which the vehicle is being operated, and the like. A consumption rate of the risk units may be determined based, at least in part, on the received sensor data. If a number of risk units in a risk unit account is below a predetermined threshold, a notification may be transmitted to the user and/or a predetermined number of risk units may be automatically added to the risk unit account.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2023Publication date: October 12, 2023Inventors: Edward A. Biemer, Grady Irey, Caryl M. Styrsky

Publication number: 20230316411Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, software, and apparatuses provide a system for adjusting a deductible based on a current driving situation. Information regarding the current driving situation related to a vehicle may be obtained from various sources. The information may be used to evaluate a degree of safety of the current driving situation. If the driving situation is deemed to be safe, the deductible may be lowered. The amount the deductible may be lowered may be determined based on insurance information regarding past accidents or past insurance claims. A notification of the adjustment may be output to the driver. Also, the adjustment may be stored with a time associated with the adjustment so that the appropriate deductible is used in case of an accident. Multiple adjustments to the deductible may be made during a single trip as the driving situation changes.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2023Publication date: October 5, 2023Inventor: Edward A. Biemer

Publication number: 20230306389Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure are directed toward systems and methods for using vehicle telematics information to compensate individuals for increases in fuel prices above a guaranteed fuel price. The approaches described herein compensate the individuals based on the difference between a guaranteed fuel price and a comparison fuel price for a coverage period, the distance traveled during the coverage period, and the estimated fuel economy of the vehicle type. A baseline fuel price is determined and used to set a guaranteed price for a coverage period. During the coverage period, a telematics device collects telematics information associated with trips taken in a vehicle. That telematics information is then stored at a data store and used to compensate an individual associated with the vehicle when fuel prices rise during the coverage period to exceed the guaranteed fuel price.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2022Publication date: September 28, 2023Inventors: Steven Carl Verney, Grady Irey, Frank Kazas, Edward A. Publication number: 20230177887Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, software, and apparatuses provide a system for making toll payments using toll payment equipment. The system may include a mobile computing device, a toll gateway, and an insurance company computing device. The mobile computing device (e.g., a phone) may be configured to communicate with the toll gateway when a vehicle carrying the mobile computing device passes through the toll gateway. The mobile computing may send a signal to the insurance company computing device to cause the insurance company computing device to pay an appropriate toll or discounted toll (if applicable). The insurance company may maintain an account for a customer from which toll payments are made. In addition, the insurance company computing device may collect information about the vehicle as it passes through the toll gateway. The insurance company computing device may use this information to determine an insurance-related value, such as an insurance premium.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 7, 2022Publication date: June 8, 2023Inventors: Thomas J.
