  • Publication number: 20140052165
Abstract: A cutting knife allows multiple different blade tips to be removably attached to a handle. The handle may be a pen-type handle that uses an activation button to move a spring-loaded plunger between an extended and a retracted position, typically using a cam and cam follower. The interchangeable blade tips may use spring-loaded cutting blades that retract, and preferably lock, within a sheath when a plunger is not pushing the blade into an extended position. Thus, the cutting blade is safely stored within the sheath when the plunger is retracted, as well as when the interchangeable blade tip is detached from the handle. The interchangeable blade tips may be disposable or reusable. The cutting knife may be configured as a surgical scalpel in which the cutting blade is a scalpel blade. In such applications, the pen-type handle may be of autoclavable materials so that it may be reusable after sterilization.

  • Patent number: 8099871
Abstract: A utility knife is useful for operations such as glazing, roofing, carpeting and SHEETROCK™ drywall fabrication wherein the knife is used in close proximity to window edges, walls or corners. A blade-holding portion of the utility knife has a planar bottom wall and structure for mounting the blade at a small angle relative to the bottom wall so that the blade is able to flex and substantially conform to the plane of a surface upon which the planar bottom surface of the utility knife is supported. A handle portion of the utility knife is offset from the planar bottom surface so as to position a user's hand away from the surface on which the utility knife is supported.

  • Patent number: 7565747
Abstract: A double-edged utility knife for carpet installers, roofers, glaziers and sheet rock workers has a two-part handle. The handle clamps a detachable reversible double-edged blade at a transverse angulated position with respect thereto. Vertical cuts can be made in tight corners without applying excessive force. The transversely angulated knife blade affords access permitting vertical cuts in tight corners. During cutting the user's hands are displaced from the cutting line, and kept from being inline with the cutting blades. Operation-induced injuries are virtually eliminated. The double edge blade is provided with a geometry especially well suited for wallboard, roofing, carpet cutting/glue scraping and glazier use.

  • Patent number: 6979340
Abstract: A single use self-contained surgical knife provides twist stability and lateral support for the knife blade. Turning a knurled ring member within the containment casing retracts the knife blade into the containment casing. Retraction of the blade is permanent; once retracted, subsequent usage of the knife blade is prevented. A substantial safety margin is provided, in that injuries occasioned by the retraction process are virtually eliminated. The knife blade remains forever in the retracted condition, preventing spread of blood borne infections such as AIDS, Hepatitis and the like, that might otherwise result from subsequent usage of the knife blade.
