  • Patent number: 5020315
Abstract: A floating piston (54) has a valved (86) vent opening (88), with the vent opening closing (92) on movement of the piston. The piston is spring loaded (56, 58) to vent air, but seal fuel. Modulation of pressure in pressure resisting chamber (48) between pump discharge and lower pressures, provides control of the valve. Pressure difference (96, 62) and valve position (36) measurements provide flow measurement data.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 8, 1989
Date of Patent: June 4, 1991
    Assignee: United Technologies Corporation
Inventors: Frank A. Leachman, Jr., Edward F. Cole
  • Patent number: 4607486
Abstract: A high speed centrifugal fuel pump delivers fuel to the main metering valve of a fuel control of a gas turbine engine for feeding the engine's burners, and a boost pump and positive displacement pump pressurize fuel for the servo medium for actuating the various valves and engine geometry actuators. The boost pump also assures that the vapor/liquid flow relationship satisfies the engine's requirements.

    Filed: December 2, 1983
Date of Patent: August 26, 1986
    Assignee: United Technologies Corporation
    Inventor: Edward F. Cole
  • Patent number: 4449359
Abstract: This invention relates to the fuel system of a gas turbine power plant and modifies a conventional fuel control to automatically vent trapped air contained in the fuel control and fuel distribution system into the engine's burners by bypassing the conventional minimum pressure and shut off valve. This serves to prime the main fuel pumps when running dry during the switching of one fuel tank to another.

Date of Patent: May 22, 1984
    Assignee: United Technologies Corporation
Inventors: Edward F. Cole, Dean H. Crombie
  • Patent number: 4354345
Abstract: To accommodate fuel having higher freezing points the continuous bypass flow of fuel from the fuel control is selectively diverted to pick up the rejected heat from the engine's lubrication system to heat the fuel in the aircraft fuel tank.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 29, 1980
Date of Patent: October 19, 1982
    Assignee: United Technologies Corporation
Inventors: Raymond A. Dreisbach, Jr., James G. Griffin, Edward F. Cole
  • Patent number: 4206595
Abstract: This system serves to collect and recycle fuel leftover in the fuel manifold and fuel distribution system of a gas turbine power plant when it is shutdown and operates in conjunction with the power plant's existing fuel control.
