  • Publication number: 20030069125
Abstract: Porous material (1) for catalytic conversion of exhaust gases including a carrier with a first porous structure (2, 2′), and an oxidation catalyst (OX) which in the presence of oxygen (O2), according to a first reaction (3), has the ability to catalyze oxidation of nitrogen monoxide (NO) into nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and, according to a second reaction (4, 4′), to catalyze oxidation of a reducing agent (HC), which oxidation catalyst (OX) is enclosed inside the first porous structure (2, 2′). The invention is characterized in that the oxidation catalyst (OX) includes iron (Fe) and silver (Ag) loaded on a zeolite. The invention also relates to a method and an arrangement and a catalytic conversion device that utilizes the porous material, and indicates an advantageous use of the porous material.

  • Patent number: 6467258
Abstract: A method and arrangement for control of a combustion engine (11) having control elements (4, 5, 17) for generation of an air/fuel mixture to each cylinder (3) of the engine (1), an exhaust system (7, 8) which is connected to the engine (1), an exhaust catalyst (10) and a NOx absorbent (11) which are provided in the exhaust system (7, 8), which method comprises: control of the control elements (4, 5, 17) in a first operating condition for generation of a comparatively lean exhaust gas mixture to the NOx adsorbent (11) for adsorption of NOx compounds in the exhaust gas mixture, and control of the control elements (4, 5, 17) in a second operating condition for generation of a comparatively rich exhaust gas mixture to the NOx absorbent (11) for desorption of NOx compounds in the exhaust gas mixture.

  • Patent number: 6331232
Abstract: Apparatus for the reduction of nitrogen oxides in gas streams are disclosed comprising an oxygen ion-conducting substrate, an anode disposed on the substrate, a cathode disposed on the substrate, and a voltage source connected to the anode and the cathode in which the cathode is comprised of gold so that the nitrogen oxides are adsorbed and dissociated on the cathode, nitrogen may recombine into nitrogen gas on the cathode, and oxygen ions are transported through the substrate from the cathode to the anode. Methods for the reduction of nitrogen oxides in gas streams are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6302683
Abstract: Methods for operating catalytic combustion chambers including first and second catalytic reactors disposed in series with an intermediate chamber therebetween are disclosed, the method including heating the first catalytic reactor to a temperature at least equal to the ignition temperature of the first catalytic reactor, introducing air and fuel mixture to the first catalytic reactor whereby catalytic combustion is initiated in the first catalytic reactor, and increasing the mass flow through the first catalytic reactor whereby combustion of the air and fuel mixture takes place in the gas phase in the intermediate chamber and the end surface of the second catalytic reactor is heated to a temperature at least equal to the ignition temperature of the second catalytic reactor and ignition takes place in the second catalytic reactor.

  • Patent number: 6238536
Abstract: Exhaust gas analyzers are disclosed for analyzing the exhaust gases from a combustion process including a sensor unit mounted for direct contact with the exhaust gases in which the sensor unit includes a number of sensors such as lambda sensors, NOx sensors, oxygen sensors, and residual heat sensors, mounted on a common substrate for detecting specific gases and temperatures in the exhaust gases and generating signals based thereon, the substrate being an oxygen-ion-conductive ceramic material and the sensors elements including conductive patterns applied to the common substrate, and a common analyzer connected to the sensor units for analyzing the signals generated by the sensor elements.

  • Patent number: 5867982
Abstract: The invention relates to a system for reducing emissions in catalytic converter exhaust systems for an internal combustion engine. The invention comprises air-fuel mixture forming means for providing a mixture of air-fuel to the engine, a catalytic converter for purifying an exhaust gas mixture from the engine, and a control unit adapted for controlling the mixture forming means so that an excess of hydrogen is generated in the exhaust gas mixture during the start-up of the engine. According to the invention, the excess of hydrogen is maintained essentially unburnt within the catalytic converter so as to provide a short light-off time for the catalytic converter.

  • Patent number: 5787706
Abstract: An exhaust gas purification device (10) for trapping combustion engine exhaust emissions, particularly hydrocarbons and particulate matter, is disclosed. The device includes a casing (12) having an inlet (14) for exhaust gases from a combustion engine. The casing (12) houses a filtering and/or adsorbing medium (16), whilst a catalytic converter (22) is arranged downstream of the medium (16). A valve arrangement is provided for controlling exhaust gas flow through the filtering and/or adsorbing medium (16). The casing further includes a throughflow passage (18) adjacent the filtering and/or adsorbing medium (16), the passage running from the upstream end to the downstream end of the filtering and/or adsorbing medium (16). The passage also includes a throttling valve (20) responsive to temperatures in the device.
