The coil antenna includes a primary coil, a secondary coil, and a core configured to couple electromagnetic energy from the secondary coil to the primary coil. The core includes a non-magnetic insulating material. The secondary coil is configured to receive the return signal. The primary coil is configured to couple electromagnetic energy from the secondary coil. The RFID tag affixed to a surgical implement.
