  • Patent number: 4400565
Abstract: A method for oligomerizing olefins in the presence of boron trifluoride and a co-catalyst comprising a heterogeneous cationic ion exchange resin catalyst is described. While the resin catalyst cannot oligomerize olefins by itself at temperatures around 75.degree.-85.degree. C., when used together with boron trifluoride an oligomer mixture may be created which has improved properties over oligomers made over only boron trifluoride. If a resin catalyst is used, a protonic promoter is not required.

  • Patent number: 4367352
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the production of high quality synthetic lubricants which comprises transforming ethylene into a mix of alpha olefins, separating from this mix of alpha olefins the alpha olefins in the range from about 14 to 20 carbon atoms, oligomerizing the alpha olefins in the range from about 14 to 20 atoms with a perfluorosulfonic acid resin catalyst and hydrogenating these oligomerized olefins. The olefins from the original mix of alpha olefins which are lighter and heavier than the 14 to 20 carbon atom alpha olefins processed above are combined and subjected to an isomerization/disproportionation process and the resulting olefins in the range of about 14 to 20 carbon atoms are oligomerized with perfluorosulfonic acid resin catalyst as above. Optionally, these olefins in the range of 14 to 20 carbon atoms may be combined with the olefins prepared directly from ethylene before oligomerization takes place. The resulting oligomers are hydrogenated.

  • Patent number: 4162358
Abstract: A liquid methylene bridged polyaromatic amine curing agent for vicinal epoxide resins with high amine content is prepared by reacting an aromatic amine mixture of aniline containing two to eight mole percent of a mononuclear aromatic diamine having the amine groups bonded to nonadjacent carbon atoms of the aromatic ring, with formaldehyde. The resulting methylene bridged polyaromatic amine curing agent produces a cured epoxy resin having a higher heat distortion temperature than conventional curing agents produced by the reaction of aniline alone with formaldehyde.

  • Patent number: 4110371
Abstract: Oxyethylene dicarboxylic acid alkali metal salts are prepared from the corresponding oxydiethylene or polyoxyethylene diol and an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a nickel-copper-chromia catalyst at temperatures from about 200 to 300.degree. C. and pressures sufficient to maintain the reactants and products substantially in liquid phase. Preferably, the disodium salt of oxydiacetic acid is prepared by the oxidation of diethylene glycol with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of the nickel-copper-chromia catalyst. The disodium oxydiacetate can be readily precipitated from the crude reaction mixture by addition of a mixture of methoanol-isopropanol with subsequent filtration.

  • Patent number: 4064170
Abstract: An improved process for the preparation of methylene-bridged polyarylpolyamines by the acid catalyzed condensation reaction of an aromatic primary amine and formaldehyde is disclosed wherein nitrilotriacetic acid is employed as the catalyst system. An aromatic primary amine and formaldehyde are mixed and reacted at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalytic amount of nitrilotriacetic acid which provides a resulting reaction product that does not have to be subjected to neutralization procedures or filtration for catalyst removal as heretofore required. The reaction product mixtures of methylene-bridged polyarylpolyamines has excellent color and can be employed without further treatment as epoxy curing agents, urethane cross linkers, as precursors for the preparation of corresponding methylene-bridged polyarylpolyisocyanates, and the like. The employment of nitrilotriacetic acid also leads to the completion of the condensation reaction in relatively short periods of time.
