Publication number: 20230337601Abstract: A modular system includes a hub and a set of modules removably coupled to the hub. The modules are physically coupled to the frame relative to each other so that each module can operate with respect to a different row of a field. An individual module includes a sensor for capturing field measurement data of individual plants along a row as the modular system moves through the geographic region. An individual module further includes a treatment mechanism for applying a treatment to the individual plants of the row based on the field measurement data before the modular system passes by the individual plants. An individual module further includes a computing device that determines the treatment based on the field measurement data and communicates data to the hub. The hub is communicatively coupled to the modules, so that it may exchange data between the modules and with a remote computing system.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 18, 2023Publication date: October 26, 2023Inventors: Lee Kamp Redden, James Patrick Ostrowski, Kent Anderson, Edward William Jeffcott Pell

Publication number: 20230210039Abstract: An autonomous farming machine navigable in an environment for performing farming action(s) is disclosed. The farming machine receives a notification from a manager that there are no obstacles in the blind spots of the detection system. The farming machine applies an obstacle detection model to the captured images to verify that there are no obstacles in unobstructed views. The farming machine determines a configuration of the farming machine. The farming machine determines a virtual safety bubble for the farming machine to autonomously perform the farming action(s) based on the determined configuration. The farming machine detects an obstacle in the environment by applying the obstacle detection model to the captured images. The farming machine determines that the obstacle is entering the virtual safety bubble. In response to determining that the obstacle is entering the virtual safety bubble, the farming machine terminates operation of the farming machine and/or enacts preventive measures.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2022Publication date: July 6, 2023Inventors: Edward William Jeffcott Pell, Ugur Oezdemir

Publication number: 20220136849Abstract: A system and a method are disclosed for planning a path within a field for a farming machine. The system predicts boundaries of the field using a previously captured image of the field and generates a suggested route to be taken by a data collection device based on the predicted boundaries. As the data collection device travels along the suggested route, the data collection device collects location data associated with a current layout of the field. The location data may be labeled with obstructions encountered along the way. Based on the location data, the system identifies current boundaries of the field, which may be different from the predicted boundaries. The current boundaries are sent to a verification device to be verified. After the current boundaries have been verified, the path for the farming machine is planned.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 3, 2021Publication date: May 5, 2022Inventors: Edward William Jeffcott PELL, Brent William WEST

Patent number: 11023726Abstract: A plant treatment system automatically adjusts camera operation parameters for a camera used by the plant treatment system to identify and treat plants in a field. The plant treatment system can generate image segments of images received from the camera and classify the image segments based on whether the image segments represent plants. The plant treatment system determines whether each of the image segments is over- or under-exposed and adjusts the camera operation parameters for the camera based on the exposure classification of the image segments. Alternatively, the plant treatment system may use a plant detection model to identify plant pixels within an image that represent plants. The plant treatment system can then determine whether the identified plant pixels are over- or under-exposed and adjust the camera operation parameters accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2020Date of Patent: June 1, 2021Assignee: Blue River Technology Inc.Inventors: Deaglan Halligan, Edward William Jeffcott Pell, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Thomas Welch Brown, Lee Kamp Redden, James Patrick Ostrowski
