  • Patent number: 4537916
Abstract: A process for preparing structured latex particles having a core and shell region wherein said latex particles are film forming at room temperature by adjusting the feed rates of the shell monomer feeds such that as the weight fraction of the shell increases the feed rate of an acrylate and/or monovinyl monomer or extended core monomer feed of monovinyl aromatic monomer is decreased whereby a shell region encapsulates the core region are described. Structured latex particles prepared by the process are also described. Films of the subject structured latex particle where the shell monomer feed is methylmethacrylate or similar high T.sub.g monomer have good film strength. Further, films of the subject structured latex where the shell monomer feed is butyl acrylate or similar monomers having water repellency characteristics have improved corrosion resistant properties.

  • Patent number: 4189335
Abstract: The distribution of a coating composition, e.g., a binder composition, on a carpet structure is determined by illuminating the coated carpet surface with light and measuring the intensity of the light returned therefrom. The intensity of the returned light relates to the distribution, i.e., (1) the amount of the illuminated surface which is coated and (2) the depth of said coating, of the coating on the carpet structure.

  • Patent number: 4182259
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for measuring the amounts of a coating material on an applicator roll. A beam of light is projected so that only a first portion thereof is intercepted by the coating material on the applicator roll. At least a fraction of the remaining light portion passes through an aperture defined by a slotted shield member and the coated roll surface, said fraction varying with the thickness of said material on the roll surface, and detector means disposed to measure said variable fraction.
