Patent number: 8314330Abstract: An umbilical for subsea installation has a core of at least two longitudinal elements like cables, tubes and solid and/or hollow filling elements and a cover surrounding the core. At least one of the hollow filling elements is provided with several perforations and the cover is permeable for sea water, thereby allowing seawater to fill the interior of the filler elements as well as the interstices between the cable, tube and the filler elements and the cover when the umbilical is submerged.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2005Date of Patent: November 20, 2012Assignee: NexansInventors: Ragnvald Graff, Einar Mjelstad, Ketil Opstad, Bjorn H. Ramstad, Morten Stensland, Jon Aarstein

Patent number: 7604435Abstract: Umbilical device, where the device has a longitudinal axis (x), and includes at least one elongated electrical cable or tube element; and an elongated load bearing component along the longitudinal axis (x) and having an external surface including at least one groove disposed along the longitudinal axis (x) and parallel thereof. The component includes a central core encompassed by a plastic or elastic layer, which is provided with the at least one groove, where the groove is designed for holding the cable or tube element within it, while allowing the cable or tube element to move substantially radially in the groove when the umbilical is bent and that the layer is made from several plastic or elastic elements.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2006Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: NexansInventors: Einar Mjelstad, Knut Ivar Ekeberg

Patent number: 7485811Abstract: An electrical signal cable having, at least two insulated conductors, wherein each of the insulated conductors is arranged in a groove (2) of a longitudinal central element (1) made of an elastic material which allows the insulated conductors to move in radial direction when the electrical signal cable is exposed to longitudinal tensile stress.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2006Date of Patent: February 3, 2009Assignee: NexansInventor: Einar Mjelstad
-
Patent number: 7158703Abstract: A subsea umbilical includes electrically insulated power conductors, fiber optic elements, electrical signal cables, and fillers within a common outer cover. At least one of the electrical signal cables is enclosed within a dedicated metal tube, and the umbilical is hung off on an offshore platform or the like and the metal tube containing the electrical signal cable is hung off separately from the umbilical.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2006Date of Patent: January 2, 2007Assignee: NexansInventor: Einar Mjelstad

Patent number: 6556780Abstract: The present invention relates to an offshore installation including an oil/gas flowline umbilical installed between a platform—or a shore installation—and a sea bed based template and including an insulated electrical cable conductor connected in series with the steel oil/gas pipe to a power supply. The main features of the invention is that the far end interconnection between the cable conductor (or parallel cable conductors) and the pipe is grounded to seawater to provide a single point grounded system, such that all the current flows in the selected cable conductors, and the system has zero volts at the far end whereby no current is transmitted though the sea. The power supply is insulated from ground and the current is fed from the power supply through the pipe, and returns through the cable, whereby a voltage level of zero Volts is obtained at the far end where the system is grounded, and all the current is forced through the cable(s) and the pipe/flowline.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2001Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: NexansInventors: Einar Mjelstad, Oyvind Iversen, Torunn Lund Clasen
